Join us on Tue 6 Dec for the last Techie Brekkie Bristol of the year, at which our Technology Director Oliver Cronk will lead a discussion on 'Sustainable Software (and software for Sustainability)'. In the discussion, he'll ask: how can we develop and maintain software in a sustainable way, limiting detrimental effects on the planet and our environment? And how can software support broader sustainability goals? Following Oliver's presentation and a Q&A, there'll be a roundtable discussion where we hope you will share your ideas and experiences – all while enjoying the usual delicious drinks and pastries! We're delighted and proud that Scott Logic is ranked 26th in Newsweek's first annual rankings of the UK’s Top 100 Most Loved Workplaces®! The list recognises companies that place appreciation, care and respect for their employees at the centre of their business model and, in doing so, have earned the loyalty and respect of the people who work for them. As our CEO Steve Foreshew-Cain says, "We’re committed to continually improving our employee experience so that we remain worthy of Most Loved Workplace recognition for many years to come.”
When it comes to harnessing government data, how can you make the best use of innovations like AI, data lakes and digital twins? As Jessica McEvoy explains, it's by focusing first on laying down the right foundations: investing in the right people, processes and skills in the right sequence. Jess reflects on the topic in this follow-up to the roundtable discussion she hosted at the recent Government Data Summit, run by Government Transformation magazine.
We’re really looking forward to Women of Silicon Roundabout next week! Our Beyond the Hype podcast is back after a summer break! In this episode, we pose the question 'Is the metaverse built on foundations of hype?' Our CTO Colin Eberhardt and Technology Director Oliver Cronk are joined by Johanna Eiramo of the Finnish National Gallery and Blockchain & Web3 Specialist Lilly Pencheva. In their conversation, they ask the question “What is Web3?” and explore what it means to be a decentralised technology. They discuss the metaverse, Roblox and other virtual environments, and very briefly touch on NFTs. But for the most part, they talk about exploration and innovation. Enjoy their lively discussion here. With a growing number of voices heralding Web3 as the future of the internet, Colin Eberhardt decided it was time to put it to the test from an engineer's perspective, seeing how it fares against the contemporary approach to building apps – the cloud. In summary: not well. For his Web3 experiment, he picked a service that he already runs on public cloud infrastructure – the applause button on our blog posts – and tried implementing it on Ethereum. He shares his learnings from that experiment here.
