‘At a time when millions of people are struggling to put food on the table, it’s shocking that essential budget range foods are not available to people who can’t get to a large supermarket. Everyone should have access to affordable nutritious food no matter where they live. Which? is now calling on supermarket bosses to ensure budget ranges that support a healthy diet are available in convenience stores, especially in areas where people are struggling the most. They must also make it easier for all customers to work out which items offer the best value for money by making sure their pricing is clear and easily comparable.’ Sue Davies MBE, Which? head of Food Policy. #AffordableFoodForAll #CostOfLivingCrisis
We caught up with the senior editor of our Which? Gardening magazine, Ceri Thomas, to find out what she does and why she enjoys it so much. Why do you love your job? I love experimenting with ideas in our trials, asking questions and finding out the answers. I’m always amazed by the differences between products and plant varieties that we try. What’s your best gardening advice? Always add controlled-release feed to the compost when planting patio pots and baskets. It will feed your plants until late summer when you can start adding liquid feed when watering. Tell us an interesting anecdote Our gardening team once visited Mary Berry’s garden and ended up eating home-made cake with Mary next to the Aga in her kitchen. Do you know that we also have a Which? Gardening Facebook group? It’s a friendly place where people chat about successes and challenges, get behind-the-scenes peeks at our trials of plants and find out more gardening tips and techniques from our gardening team. https://lnkd.in/dmYZxbB2
Introducing Richard Williams, senior user researcher at Which?. Before joining Which?, Richard was at Citizens Advice for nearly 10 years. He started off as a volunteer and then worked in policy research, impact & evaluation, and spent the past five years working in user research. At Which?, Richard conducts research that helps us understand the needs and experiences of our users. It's hard to put into words the energy and motivation it gives me – I just absolutely love it. Since joining, everyone has been so welcoming and encouraging, and I've been made to feel like a valuable member of the organisation. I look forward to continuing to advocate for our users, so their needs are always right at the heart of everything we do.’ #JobsAtWhich

Bus and coach passengers bound for Europe stand to lose their rights to compensation for delays in Dover, under government plans to delete thousands of EU laws. Rocio Concha Galguera, Which? director of Policy and Advocacy 'It’s clear that the government does not currently have a firm enough grip on the extent of legislation which is at risk of simply slipping off the statute books by mistake. As things stand, if the disruption we witnessed at the Port of Dover were to occur during the Easter holidays next year, thousands of passengers’ rights, including eligibility for compensation in the event of delays or cancellations, would all but evaporate.'
Which?’s latest food and drink inflation tracker finds staples such as porridge oats, milk, bread and butter have been subject to shocking price rises in recent months. Writing in City AM, Which?'s head of Food Policy Sue Davies MBE argues that these figures are a further example of why supermarkets need to do more to support their customers through the cost of living crisis. From July, the Financial Conduct Authority will introduce its new Consumer Duty, which should raise the standards of consumer protections across financial services and lead to better outcomes for consumers. As Rocio Concha Galguera argues in The i Paper today, this is a significant step towards protecting consumers from harm. But rules alone will not be enough. She writes: 'To create the desired change in firms’ behaviour, the implementation of these new rules must be supervised robustly, with tough enforcement where necessary.' https://lnkd.in/eugs6Ygu
Which? research finds more than 200,000 low-income families with young children are missing out on up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers. 'There is an important role for the government to expand the Healthy Start scheme and increase its value, but we are also calling on supermarkets to help customers by better promoting what is available and providing extra top-ups for those who use the scheme.'
