We’re not talking about bad habits here like biting your nails, only good habits. Forming some good habits will help the hunt for that dream job.
Habits are repetitive and the more you repeat them, the harder they become to break, so with that in mind, the secret is to keep doing them over and over again.
Once the habit is deep rooted, you’ll feel a yearning to do it even when you don’t want to, and that’s what you need when you’re job hunting, you have to be consistent. It’s a bit like when you first start going to the gym, it’s hard, but once the habit is formed people talk of showing up at the gym even when they feel at their worse.
What habits do you need to adopt to get you competing for that dream job even when you want a duvet day?
Sleep
To be able to give your best you need to getting enough sleep every night, the recommended sleep range is 7-9 hours. If you’re one for watching Netflix into the early morning hours how are you going to feel the next day when you’re networking with recruiters and approaching employers? When you deprive yourself of sleep you can suffer from concentration loss, ill health and irritable mood swings, not really what you want employers or recruiters to see.
Get into the habit of getting a good nights sleep every night, if you need help there are some excellent apps available.
Water
Job hunting can be active, lots of interviews and lots of networking, both can mean running for trains, buses and taxis. Drinking plenty of water will keep muscles hydrated, which means you won’t suffer from muscle fatigue. There’s nothing worse than running to get to an interview and then literally collapsing into the chair when you're offered to take a seat. The other bonus of drinking plenty of water is that your skin will glow due to being hydrated.
Connections
It's important to be well connected, many jobs these days are filled by referrals. It’s common to hear other people’s stories about how they got their job from someone they know, or it was the friend of the person they know, it’s good to be well connected. Get into the habit of making at least one new connection every day.
Repetition
Anyone who is good at anything exercises their skills every day; they repeat their habit daily until they're excellent at it. The same must apply to you. Keep going over your pitch and your answers to interview questions; repetition is the mother of learning.
Every day make sure to engage with some employers and recruiters, retweet some of their posts, make sure they’re aware of you. Create a visual CV, tag some recruiters, tweet nuggets of knowledge about your industry and join in with some Twitter chats. Keep showing up, and in no time you’ll have some good followers who will be able to help you with your job hunt.
Remember, habits are what we repeatedly do, they often become an unconscious pattern of behaviour, aim to become unconsciously excellent!
