      Marketing Specialist (FTC) Interview

      12 Feb 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Eventbrite (London, England) in Feb 2018

      Interview

Summary: 1) One screening telephone Interview with the Snr HR Generalist UK & Ireland (UK & IE). 2) One telephone interview with the hiring manager. Description: I received an email from the Snr HR Generalist UK & IE inviting me to attend a screening phone interview. Emails were only ever exchanged. They didn't call me to arrange the interview. To be honest, whilst they asked some questions, of those questions that I asked towards the end of the interview, they didn't appear to know the answers to, and therefore, they just advised me to speak to the hiring manager. Having had the screening interview on a Friday, the Snr HR Generalist UK & IE advised that the hiring manager is available on Monday afternoon. That's all I got. No further written confirmation of this second interview and no details of who I was going to speak with. On Monday afternoon, I got suited and booted and made my way to the Eventbrite London HQ. I still did not know who I was going to speak with as the Snr HR Generalist UK & IE had sent no further details. Needless to say, I received a text message from the hiring manager to advise me that they were running late and could they push back the interview by 30 minutes. Thankfully, I noted down the name of the hiring manager. I replied to say that as I had arrived early, I was already in the area/close by the HQ. The hiring manager replied with 'you do know it's a telephone interview don't you?' My reply was that I didn't know that it was a telephone interview, as the Snr HR Generalist UK & IE did not send me any written confirmation. Their text message reply was 'that's unfortunate'. I wasted travel costs and my time. I advised the hiring manager that it may be better to take the call when I'm at home, and as they were already running late, the interview should be re-arranged on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the hiring manager called me, but, did not reference anything at all about the lack of communication re the format of the second interview the day before. The call sounded as though they were in a fishbowl and I knew more a less that I wouldn't get the job as they asked me what was my last salary, and when I replied with the details, they said that this role is aimed at someone with around two years experience, and my salary was higher than what was budgeted. It came as no surprise that on Saturday, the Snr HR Generalist UK & IE emailed me to say that I had not been successful. Conclusions: 1) Very poor communication by the Snr HR Generalist UK & Ireland. 2) Apart from the words 'that's unfortunate', the hiring manager lacked any empathy whatsoever. 3) I would have expected the Snr HR Generalist UK & IE to have stated during the first screening call that I was overqualified. 4) I advised the hiring manager that I spotted a small typo in the headline of the first blog post. I thought this may show that I was an attention to detail type of candidate. Sadly, it made no difference. 5) I don't understand why companies think that it's acceptable to send candidates rejection emails over a weekend. Personally speaking, I feel that this type of news can wait and be sent during the 'working' week. The saying 'first impressions count' rings a bell in relation to my experience. And unfortunately, Eventbrite didn't make a very good first impression at all. This does surprise me as ‘Eventbrite is the world's largest event technology platform’, and therefore, it begs the question: If this is how they treat their candidates, how on earth do they treat their customers?!
