I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at HubSpot (Dublin, Dublin) in Jun 2017
Interview
The process started with a call from one the internal recruiters, we had a quick chat about the role and Hubspot in general.
I was sent on a tech assessment which needed to be completed in 3 hours. It was great, you can use any language or tools you wish to get it completed. I managed to get it done in about 2 hours 20 mins.
I was then asked to come in for a face to face in their head office, this process took about 3 hours broken up into roughly 45 mins or more with 4 different groups of people.
The first part was a tech question/assignment. You needed to write a simple JavaScript function, I won't give away the details but it was a good test. You can use a whiteboard or your laptop with google to help you along the way if needed. It was pretty straight forward but I think being in a room with people can put you off with pressure, they tried to help and guide me through the solution. I didn't finish it but I nearly had it done and I felt the guys knew where I was going with it as I was talking through my thinking through out the process.
The second part was another tech test, some low level JavaScript functions to test your knowledge. This wasn't too difficult, I did manage to complete all parts of this and had a nice chat with the guy.
Third part was another technical test, you were given a partially working application written in JavaScript(ES6), basic HTML and CSS. You needed to expand on and fix some broken functionality. Then you needed to style it to how it looked in the example image. There was some basic ES6 usage they want to see. I managed to get it working perfectly, the guy even said I did a good job.
After that I met the head of engineering for a normal chat about my reasons for wanting to working at Hubspot, my short and long term career aspirations. Was a really nice chat and I got more of an insight of how Hubspot works day to day.
I left feeling confident that I did my best, the next day I was told that they didn't want to progress with my application. The only reason being that I wasn't what they were looking for on the technical side for a senior role.
All and all it was a great experience, I felt I bit hard done by though as it is very hard to gauge what they are looking for in terms of technical ability since I completed everything they asked.
Maybe next time :)
Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review. I'm glad you found our process challenging yet enjoyable, and it sounds like our team took the time to understand your thought process and work with you through the assessments. I appreciate your feedback on transparency on the technical requirements of the interview up front - definitely something I can share with the team so that we can get better on that in the future. While I'm sorry it didn't work out, I'd encourage you to stay in touch with us - don't hesitate to reach out in the future as you build on your technical knowledge. -Becky
