The interview process started well: I had a call with the UX team lead, then reviewed my portfolio with another member of the design team. After this review, I received a standard writing assessment. All was normal until the end of this phase. The week after my exercise was submitted, I was contacted by the recruiter for the first time: She walked me through some basics about the position that had never been discussed with me beforehand, then informed me that the design team “didn’t get the responses they were looking for” with the first test. Their solution was to put all remaining applicants through a second writing test with new questions that “better addressed” the perceived flaws in the group’s responses, something I’ve never encountered in any other interview. I was rejected after the submission of the second test, and I’ve now spent 7+ hours providing free labor to this company because they couldn’t decide what they wanted.
