I was contacted by a Robert Half Japan consultant on LinkedIn about a Senior Android Developer role. After agreeing to move forward, we had a screening call that felt one-sided — the consultant asked few meaningful questions and showed little genuine interest in my background or experience. The conversation was vague, with no clear next steps communicated. This was particularly surprising given that I have over 7 years of experience working in English-speaking environments at international companies in Europe.
A few days later I was told the company had decided not to move forward due to English proficiency concerns. When I asked for more details, the consultant admitted the rejection was actually his own personal assessment from our call — not feedback from the client at all. It was also never made clear whether my profile was actually submitted to the company or not.
Overall the experience felt unprofessional: evasive communication, a decision misrepresented as coming from the client, and no transparency about what actually happened with my candidacy.
