      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Tableau Software

      Interview

The recruiter screen for 30 mins where we spoke about the experience so far. A phone call about a week later with a designer. It was a pretty straightforward process with questions related to recent projects. Spoke through my process.

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Tableau Software

      Interview

Applied through employee referral. Process took about 2 months. My recruiter was really nice and showed interested in my work. This made me take Tableau more seriously. I had two phone call sessions and then a design exercise. After turning in the exercise, I was invited for an on-site. The on site involved 5 sessions and a portfolio presentation (which is optional) each taking an hour. A total of 6 hours interviewing. The toughest task was reserved for the session right after lunch break when I was all tired and full from lunch. Everything is planned and done intentionally. From the questions, to the timing of each session, and even the people in the room. I felt I had a good interview at the end of the day, but I wasn't sure if getting an offer. I was surprised when contacted 2 days after with news of an offer. They said they liked that I was unique and different. They are only interested in your process. They'll ask you questions as you're thinking. They'll expect you to think out loud. It helps to have used to product. They'll ask you what you can improve about it. They'll ask you why you want to work at tableau. You might have senior folks in your sessions (the VP of visual analytics and design was in mine). They are picky, but just focus on being your awesome unique self. I think you have to show your passion too.

      User Experience Designer Interview

      20 May 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Tableau Software

      Interview

Went in for 5 paired up interviews, plus a portfolio review. Everyone was extremely nice, talked up the company and their culture. One interview was with engineering team members, one was senior people in the more technical/statistical area, the rest were interviews with members of the UX team. The recruiter flat out told me that they are very picky, and that they reject more resumes and interviewees than any other group at Tableau. I suspect you must nail all the interviews, the portfolio review, and get a thumbs up from all 10 interviewers to get an offer. If just one person has doubts about you I suspect that is enough for them to reject you. Except for the interview with the engineering team members, all of the interviews involved developing a design on a whiteboard for a scenario they give you. Since I did not get an offer, I cannot offer any advice on what they are looking for and what strategy works best. I worked through different ideas, presented by reasoning for each approach. It is possible they were looking for something more structured, or perhaps something more cutting edge. They tell you there is no "right or wrong", but I could tell many of them had specific preferences for different solutions. I saw none of what some of the other reviews had said, that they were disorganized or rude. But, I think these are all people who are passionate about their product and company and, if they do not feel you have the same passion or personality, they won't offer you a job. I suspect that in my case, one of the more senior members of the team didn't like some of my feedback about the Tableau product and my performance on the exercise, but since they don't offer any specific feedback it is hard to know for sure.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Almost everyone will ask, "Why do you want to work at Tableau." Be prepared to answer this every time with the same passion as the first time.
      1 Answer

      Question 2

Be prepared to offer specific feedback on Tableau - what you did with it, problems you had, why you like it, etc. If you comment on a problem, be prepared to offer specifics on how you would fix that problem.
