Disappointing Interview Experience – Lack of Alignment and Understanding: While I appreciated the initial outreach and had productive discussions with HR, the interview process at Wayfair left much to be desired. From the beginning, I was clear that my background wasn’t in Java, but I have extensive experience in other technologies. HR was understanding and assured me this wouldn’t be an issue. However, when it came to the technical interview, I was only allowed to code in Java. Despite clearly stating that I’m not proficient in Java but have strong fundamentals in other languages, the interviewer insisted on a Java-only approach. I quickly explained the solution to the problem given—a relatively simple DSA question—demonstrating my grasp of the core concepts, but the lack of Java expertise led to a slower coding process. The feedback I received was focused purely on the speed of coding in Java, completely overlooking my clear understanding of the problem and solution. This narrow focus on one specific language, especially when flexibility was discussed upfront, indicates a lack of consideration for core software engineering skills and problem-solving abilities. In my view, an effective interview should assess strong computer science fundamentals and adaptability, not just proficiency in a single language, especially if that language was not a primary skill to begin with. If Wayfair values language-specific expertise over general engineering excellence, this isn’t a place I see myself thriving
