    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Holiday Extras (Hythe, England) in Dec 2021

    Interview

Two consecutive one-hour interviews. First one with an HR person plus a technical person. Second one is a pair programming exercise on Codility.

While the first interview is fairly standard, the second one is extremely frustrating and doesn't provide a real chance to show technical skills. You are given one hour to build an API according to some specifications and the API is tested against a set of unit tests.

Unfortunately, the unit tests for this exercise are written quite poorly and behave in a very unexpected manner. My pair programming partner (Holiday Extras employee) was also extremely disinterested in the process and barely spoke to me. He kept looking sideways at his other monitor and I felt like I was interrupting him every time I had to ask a question. Whenever I was stuck he would just copy over a few lines of code from his solution which he seemingly didn't understand. I found it overall quite unprofessional.
    Interview

Questions were about 50% technical and 50% behavioural e.g. "Tell us what you can bring to the company", "What is the difference between relational and non-relational databases?"
