Pros

I learned a lot, I grew a lot. Colleagues were lovely for the most part. The science is sound and innovative and there's a lot of work being done there that could make a huge difference in the long run. I felt like I was part of something important.

Cons

What a mess. Org chart changed every 5 seconds. In 2 years we had 3 CEOs. Salary was well below industry standard and we were regularly expected to work more than 40 hours a week even though this time was uncompensated because we were exempt employees. There was also a huge communication divide between the labs and the offices- expectations/timelines were often placed that were so tight that they were either impossible or doomed from the start. The ignorance? denial? was so pervasive that they didn't see the issue when 3 people quit in one week.

Pros

The CSO, Dan Voytas, is a highly reputable scientist. Although his ability to influence the quality of science is diminishing as he phases out of the day to day management.

Cons

The company can't decide if it's a breeding, biotech or food company without much competitive advantage in any of the mentioned fields. The management is morphing into corporate style without the necessary resources to back it up. Employees are expected to work start-up hours without the start-up pay (especially at the scientist/RA level), making it the worst of both worlds. With an ineffective upper management, toxic gossip culture, tendency to promote people who are easy to control, the company can no longer attract or retain top talents. If you leave the company to pursue a new career, Calyxt will send your new employer a letter "reminding" them that you have signed a confidentiality agreement with Calyxt, which holds absolutely no legal power but to create a false impression that you may have left the company on bad terms.
