Pros

Well educated colleagues from top schools Good work / life balance, 2 days from home / 3 days at work is very common. Good health care coverage, retirement plan and overall benefits NYC - free museums, parks , zoo for the family - worth at least $1,000 a year. Social / Volunteer activities for those that are interested

Cons

Work gets done by who you know and how strong your internal network is - not exactly meritocratic. 80% time spent just trying to convince others that it's the right thing to do , 20% time actually spend doing it. Do not expect to do something earth shattering or extremely dynamic - Amex does do cool stuff but it pails compared to the number of employees it has employed and unless you get into the right group you might not get the opportunity. If you come from a startup you will do in 8 months what it might take 2 months to do in a startup. I would recommend that you evaluate the Job role and prospect of the group you are potentially getting hiring into much more than American Express as a whole. What applies to one team in the company might not apply to another it varies widely. I wouldn't turn down a good offer in a group that has good prospects and is doing some really interesting stuff.

Pros

They have fantastic pay for the position you're in, and they teach you interesting and engaging utility of modern technology mixed with legacy fundamentals. I've learned quite a bit while AmEx while getting paid more than fairly - I'd recommend a stretch here to whomever may be reading this!

Cons

The Company is huge, and at times it may take more than a little time to get recognized for your abilities and the growth you've had. There's a reason there is a "only way up is out" reputation exists for some enterprise companies...
