Cons

Pros
-- Great place to start your career as a junior software engineer. -- Allows options of 100% remote, hybrid, 100% in office. -- Lots of training available for tech workers. -- Pretty chill work culture. -- Job security, smaller risk of being laid off than with other employers. -- As a large company there are a lot of options for different teams you can work on, different programming languages and technologies. As junior or mid-level, you can learn a lot.
Cons
-- Pay is very low compared to competing employers. -- On many teams you will have to work with low quality legacy code / systems. -- Sometimes the work culture is a little TOO chill. There are some people here who coast and get away with low performance, like the stereotype of working at a government agency. -- They partially staff most teams with contractors from the low-quality "body shop" contracting companies. -- Management seems uninterested in improving Nationwide as a place to work just because it's "not bad". -- In the end, as a high-performing worker, I didn't see a future here for myself to grow into a talented (and appropriately compensated) software engineer. It's better if you eventually want to get into upper management, which I did not.

Pros
There are company paid holidays.
Cons
Everything else about this place is terrible: pay, politics, covert racists, and nepotism.
- 1.02 Dec 2023Litigation ParalegalFormer Employee, more than 3 years
Pros
There is potential to work from home and great benefits.
Cons
Low pay and excessive amount of work. The company got rid of legal secretaries so paralegals have assumed legal secretary tasks without additional pay. They are working towards a 1 attorney to 1 paralegal model but never got there due to a revolving door of attorneys and staff.

Pros
Can work remote. Opportunity for growth. Pay for licensing.
Cons
The burnout is real. It has been back to back calls for the last 6 months and most of management isn’t super supportive or understanding about it. They laid off a bunch of employees at the end of March and 5 mins in between calls became 1 second between calls. Absolute mind numbing work. Brought concern about this to one of my leaders and was basically laughed at. This job is also very dependent on what manager you’re randomly assigned. 1st manager out of training was completely rude to put it gently. Took 3 months before he ever met with me 1 on 1. Called me the wrong name and then told me I wasn’t his choice to be hired.

Perhaps it is not reflective of future work you will do as an actuary.

- 5.05 Nov 2023Senior Retirement SpecialistCurrent Employee, more than 3 yearsHunt Valley, MD
Pros
Company benefits are great overall with medical/dental insurance coverage, HSA plan, EyeMed vision discounts, PTO and 401(k) matching program. Also offers pension plan for employees who work 3+ years and that's a bonus!
Cons
Compensation is comparable to the industry averages. Work-life balance is very good and the company does care about their employees and has a very good corporate culture. Leadership and management listens and provides excellent communications to all employees on a regular basis.
