Pros

• Supportive and talented colleagues. • Line managers create a decent work environment when given the space to do so. • The company had potential when toxic leadership was temporarily removed.

Cons

The founder fosters a toxic work environment, with a well-known reputation for inappropriate and unprofessional behavior, particularly towards young female employees. • Gaslights employees, making them feel guilty for voicing concerns. • Deprives staff of basic benefits and fair compensation. • Operates with a “my way or the highway” mentality, stifling progress and employee morale. • Creates unnecessary stress and unrealistic expectations. • Uses technicalities to withhold commission, prioritising control over fairness.

Pros

Commission % was good but heard it is a lot less now. It was rare you got it though especially with the company struggling.

Cons

Where to start? Terrible base salary. Job was completely mis-advertised as a media graduate (job description stated you'd learn social media strategy and work with great brands) but in reality was a sales job where you get a script and aren't allowed to write your own emails. The script is made up of many lies and upper management encourage 'lying' to clients to get them on board. You are selling pages in a coffee table book to clients who sign on thinking they will reach their target audience but pretty sure no one actually gets the books. The whole premise of the company is lying to get clients to onboard which becomes apparent the longer you are at the company. No sick pay or benefits (other than commission) whatsoever. The commission you get 1/2 30 days if client pays but 2nd instalment is at CEO discretion IF and WHEN they want to give you it - usually months and months after event even though we were told it would be consecutive month after event. Minimum holidays. No sick pay. No flexibility in working environment (very much babied and don't trust staff to do their work) Creepy management who need sacked but HR do not care. Numerous cases where manager makes inappropriate comments and actions. They want everyone to agree to everything being said and if you have an opinion/question you are on the dislike list. Staff are all misogynistic, sexist and lack empathy. Honestly would never recommend SJH Group / St Jamess House / Black Dog to anyone. To clients - stay away and do not sign up to the scams as you will probably go bankrupted.

Pros

I joined SJH Group as I left University in 2020 and it’s been an incredible journey of personal and professional growth. The guidance and mentorship that I have received since joining the company has changed me as an individual. I feel as though I have really developed and come out of my shell as a person and have become a much more confident individual gaining interpersonal / sales skills that I will take with me and use for the rest of my life. The management team are all amazing and supportive. The relationship between sales and the publishing office is also really good. Everyone who works for the company is easy to talk to and people really look out for each, it is sort of like a big family. There are a number incredible incentives such as holidays, bonuses and other gifts such as alcohol and food to be achieved. In addition to the incentives, management often bring in treats such as chocolate, sweets and pastries to reward everyone for their hard work. The gifts and incentives are incomparable to anywhere else, staff truly are spoilt. I am fortunate enough to be going off travelling to Australia for a year now. When I originally approached my boss, he was really happy for me and wanted me to pursue my dream for which I feel very fortunate and blessed. I am looking forward to working at SJH when I return!

Cons

It can be slightly scary joining at first given the nature of trying to sell if you haven’t before but the structures in place make it easy for everyone who joins to succeed. The management team are brilliant in supporting you if you are stuck and need guidance.
