Good Pay But Very Old School

Pros

STV pays very well. They give you good equipment (laptops, monitors, etc) and tech support is really good as well. Good variety of challenging projects with decent budgets. The general atmosphere is laid back. The office is empty at 5pm.

Cons

The company is no longer employee owned. General opinion of corporate higher ups is that employees must work in the office and are incapable of working remotely. There is an upper management contingent that is extremely resistant to change. The timesheet program is ancient and the official browser is Internet Explorer (no longer supported). There are some really good working groups and then there are other groups.

Pros

Handful of intelligent, talented, and genuine people. Opportunities to work on prominent projects.

Cons

This company is a boys club. All of upper management will band together regardless of the situation and if they even agree with it or not. They create inappropriate relationships in and out of the office with their subordinates. I am personally aware of several complaints to HR regarding 1 manager in particular and nothing has been done about it - instead all of upper management shuns the reporter (who is typically female). Forget trying to stay neutral because they will turn on anyone at any point for whatever scenarios they make up in their heads. They create an environment that is not only impossible to grow and learn, but also mentally draining. I have gotten to the point where I dread coming to work, not because I dislike my job/projects but because the managers I report to are dreadful, degrading, disrespectful, and straight up unprofessional. Although there is a handful of talented and wonderful staff, I am currently looking for a new job and can't wait until I can leave. I wish I never joined this company to begin with - it was not worth the emotional stress that should never occur in any professional environment.

Doesn't care about their employees.

Pros

Good retirement plan and benefits. Allows carry over of PTO

Cons

Doesn't care about the employees, especially the long term employees. Doesn't promote from within unless you hold a position within a professional organization, or speak at seminars. Top heavy in upper management, especially VPs and Directors. Doesn't recognize the hard work being put in by the employees, no bonuses unless you are upper management. Reactive instead of proactive.

Not good

Pros

Flexible working hours. Friendly lower staff

Cons

B&F division is a sinking ship. B&F PMs seems to always picture a rosy outline to upper management and upper management stupidly bites on the crap. Upper management also does not take criticism well and lets go of employee that points out flaws. PM/Managers throws its own subordinate under the bus. Major favoritism existing within departments (Not hvac/plumb/struc). Teaching sessions can be summed up by getting chewed out for hours without actually being told what is wrong and teaching the designers how to fix it (usually on the day of the submission). Lead roles are given to employees that are incompetent or does not have leadership quality to actually get the job done. Raises are usually based on who is favorite to upper management (or immediate manager), has nothing to do with talent or hardwork. Open door policy is not practiced well. Mentorship does not exist, company has gone through multiple lead HR (VP) in the past four years due to CEO's micro management. Firm does not seem to grasp the idea of developing younger staff. Office space has a very depressing and gloom look. An improvement plan was put together by few employees few years back but it disappeared into the corporate wormhole. No pantry with seating for employees to sit and eat lunch, you either sit at you desk alone or eat outside. Collab space didn't exist until 2018 and was quickly turned back to working space due to lack of workstations for all employees. Interns are stuffed in conference rooms because there are no desk for them and not important enough to actually plan around them (its not like they are the future, right?).

Highly Recommend Working Here

Pros

The workplace culture is very respectful of the individual, and the marketing department in particular highly values the need for work/life balance. This is very rare in the A-E industry, where burnout for marketing/proposal staff is common. The salary and benefits are very competitive (I would even say generous compared to other firms I've worked at) and they even offer overtime for staff making less than $90K. And there are lots options for career advancement for entry level and junior professionals (up to a point, see cons below).

Cons

The marketing department can be a little too rigid in their processes, with systems and processes developed and put in place based on what works in the headquarters office in New York. This doesn't always work well in practice for other offices that don't have the same staff or resources as HQ does. Options are also limited for advancing into a regional or departmental management/director position, but only because everyone likes working at STV so much that there isn't a lot of turnover at those upper management levels.

Pros

Good support for professional development / continuing education / licensure.

Cons

If you're a junior level staff, Upper management won't grant you a promotion on merit alone. Vouch for yourself to get noticed.
