A horrific company to work for- stay clear

Pros

Some of the colleagues make it almost worthwhile working there. Some of the managers are compassionate and listen to you, although their hands are tied due to the power that the directors have over everyone.

Cons

I don't even know where to start... Working here (head office employee) has left me and many others scarred for life (mentally and emotionally). Old fashioned/chaotic way to run a business. Undervalued and overworked (including terrible pay for the long hours you work- 8.30-5.30 or 6pm for management). Statutory sick pay. Pay docked if you have a doctors appointment. If you are more than 3 minutes late, you will get 15 minutes pay docked. The strict and unreasonable work culture that the directors have in place means that everyone is miserable and puts the fear of god in employees, creating mental health issues for many. Sexual harassment and assault by the directors seems to be the norm in this workplace, along with blatant sexism. HR are ok, however, their hands are tied due to being a private company, meaning that they can't/ don't want to really help you, just the bare minimum. Pretty sure the way they handle some things aren't even legal. Zero training offered, meaning you are left to guess how everything works, waiting to be shouted at/blamed for doing it wrong. No processes put in place meaning that the whole workplace is a shambles; creating a ridiculous amount of stress, tension and miscommunication amongst everyone. Listening to music is banned and most people don't have any access to the internet- it's like being back in the 70's. CCTV everywhere, which makes everyone paranoid and on edge. The intimidation from the directors trickles down through the managers to the rest of the staff, which makes you feel like your job is constantly on the line. Virtually no career progression, or, take on more work for the same money. Weirdly, the directors are loyal to their managers, even if they are absolutely useless, incompetent and have lost them considerable amounts of money each year. Some managers will blame you for things that they have done wrong, in order to keep their own job safe. This has resulted in employees recording/ emailing everything in order to keep a track of the constant contradictions by the manager and to stop you being reprimanded for something you didn't do. This is NOT NORMAL- you shouldn't have to resort to this every time you work with your manager and creates even more stress for yourself. Some management will manipulate and play mind games with you; treating you like a child. Zero benefits (including the pointless discount on clothing that is already ridiculously overpriced and terrible quality). No flexible working, despite the numerous employees with young kids. Ironic, because the directors all have big families. Unnecessary drug and alcohol testing. They don't care about their customers at all or investing in marketing- it's all about making a quick buck for the directors.

Pros

The majority of the people working here are great - without them I would not still be with the company.

Cons

This is by far the worst company I have ever worked for. The way the Directors treat employees is appalling - in many instances it is bullying at its worst form. They often publicly degrade and humiliate individuals. You are never treated as a valued employee, you are nothing more than disposable to them. And they will tell you that. The Directors have created an environment of fear, intimidation and sexism. There is a strong blame culture within the company. Sexual harassment is rife within the company. There is not a proper HR department to deal with complaints - it would be taken to senior management level and all senior managers are male (and are often the ones causing harassment). No training is given and there are no opportunities for self development. Yet, you will be expected to know everything and you will get the blame if things go wrong. You're expected to do the job of 3 different people - with no thanks for doing it. Very high expectations but not remotely possible to to achieve with the training or facilities provided. No career progression opportunities. Really high staff turnover for a company of this size. Some employees have been very publicly fired. Pay is terrible. The Directors will tell you that in this current economic climate you're lucky to have a job. Minimum wage for most employees. You have to clock in and out every time you leave leave the building. You will be docked 15 minutes wages for being more than 3 minutes late. Pay reviews whilst annually are solely at the Directors discretion - £0, £250, £500, £750, possibly £1000 (never heard of anyone getting more and it's normally at the lower end of the scale). You won't get the opportunity to say why you deserve a pay rise - what counts is their opinion of you and the amount of work they think you do. Long hours - 8:30 till 5:30 Monday to Friday Only statutory maternity pay. Directors don't make it easy to return to work after. The company does not openly offer flexible working hours. Very few employees work part time and those that do fought tooth and nail to get it. No benefits whatsoever. No sick pay, no bonus. No incentive to do well at your job (other than to avoid the public telling off that you're rubbish at your job from the Directors) CCTV throughout the office. Directors watch it at their desks to make sure you're working. Constant negative feedback. You have to be very mentally strong to work here. The company is disorganised at best. They are archaic in their way of working. The Directors change their mind constantly - it causes confusion and chaos at all levels from head office to stores. It's very much an old boys club - I'm sure if you're an older male that plays golf you'll avoid many of the issues I've mentioned above! Otherwise I would stay away from this company at all costs. (I have generalised my role in order to protect my identity - it is likely that I could be disciplined or fired for openly expressing my opinion)

Pros

The people you work with are great. You get on well with them and socialise outside of work a lot.

Cons

Manager is completely clueless. Since I started he has handed over jobs that he should be doing to three other individuals and neglects much of his other duties. He has his favourites and anyone that isn't one of them, he snubs. HR treats you like rubbish and there are no benefits or chance of getting a pay rise even if you help to increase sales significantly. Directors have been caught dodging tax by HMRC recently to the tune of £5m while they drive fancy cars, their staff are docked 15 minutes wages if they are late - even if it is by a minute. People have walked out of their jobs publicly and female members of staff have been victimised and belittled in front of others. The Khushi brothers run trespass like some sweatshop and the products are rip off versions of bigger brands products. I openly saw one of the directors critique a north face jacket in the canteen with one of the designers in front of other staff and say that we could use this part and copy this bit. The directors and account manager watch you on the cctv cameras as if you are going to steal from the company - the products aren't worth stealing in the first place. Staff moral is abysmal and the turnover of staff is at ridiculous levels. Every day it seems that someone is leaving and they had around a brown envelope to pay for a leaving gift for them. Even folk that you don't know or have a clue where they sit etc.
