Five years after the pandemic changed his life, Chris Waller is using his experiences to uplift other men battling mental health issues. Chris recalls the moment he realized he needed help, overwhelmed and unaware during an anxiety attack. “I was just repeating myself… I looked like I was having a heart attack,” he reflects. This wake-up call led him to seek therapy and reconnect with an old friend. Their daily walks became a lifeline, inspiring Chris to create "We Power On" – a supportive community encouraging men to talk openly about mental health. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt that as a female that I couldn’t progress, but certainly that my background was not the type of background shared by many others I worked with when I moved into Financial Services.” Sam Bowerman grew up in a working-class household in Essex and joined the bank in 2003. She is now People Director for Retail, Wealth and Ulster and the new co-Sponsor of Socio-economic Diversity. At the bank, we have a working group dedicated to addressing socio-economic diversity.
