Every October, as part of Black History Month (BHM), we celebrate the stories and experiences of Black individuals who have made their mark on history. With this year’s BHM theme being “Celebrating our Sisters”, we recently spoke with our colleague, Aisha Saliki, about her own journey as a Black woman working in policing, and the inspiring journey that brought her to where she is today. What message would you give to others considering policing as a career? I want to emphasise that TVP is a place of opportunity and personal growth. Throughout my journey, I have encountered remarkable individuals and embraced a variety of roles. The force offers a vast array of career paths for officers, staff, and IT professionals, allowing you to start young and retire with the organisation. Embrace the passion that drives you and remember that diversity strengthens our community. It is essential that the police are seen as actively involved in marginalised communities and committed to positive change. – Feeling inspired by Aisha’s and want to learn more about the career opportunities available at TVP? We encourage you to visit our TVP Careers Roles page, and also our Vacancies portal where you will find all our current staff role opportunities. The Valuing Difference and Supporting You pages offer a good insight into the work that TVP is doing to establish an inclusive, supportive culture that values skills and experience.
‘Be Bold, Be Seen, Be Heard’: National Women of Colour in Policing The National Police Chiefs’ Council’s (NPCC’s) 2025 vision is for policing to be a profession with a more representative workforce that reflects the people it serves. With more women joining policing than ever before, the National Women of Colour in Policing UK (NWoCiP UK) group was launched in late 2022 and aims to inspire women of colour in policing to realise their potential. What does the NWoCiP do? The group wants to improve the voice and position of women of all colour in policing whether a police officer, staff member or volunteer, through developing an understanding of lived experiences and barriers to development and progression. At the heart of this endeavour, akin to the Thames Valley Women’s Network, lies the desire to uplift others by leaning in and creating a platform where women can share their experiences, learn from one another, and benefit from an array of opportunities. This summer, the group organised an event at the College of Policing in Ryton, hosted by Nita Pankhania (who is currently seconded from TVP), the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Lead at the College. The event focused on a wide range of topics, encouraging attendees to think about their roadmap to personal and professional success.
