This week, 21-27 March, is #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek and Leanne Lingham, tech support team manager, wrote a piece for the Which? Intranet to share her experience and help raise awareness. She says: ‘My most important role is being Mum to my 12-year-old son, Roman. He is the light of my life. He is funny, courageous, sensitive, sarcastic, clever and strong willed; he is also on the autism spectrum. ‘Roman had medical issues soon after birth and I was told his development would be delayed. However, I knew something was not quite right. 'What followed over the next few years was endless medical appointments and striving for a diagnosis. Roman was diagnosed just before his fourth birthday with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I began the process of getting a Statement of Special Educational Needs and applied to the special school I knew would benefit him. This took a further two years. ‘Now at 12, Roman is thriving. He has many interests and an incredible sense of adventure. ‘Advice I would give to any parent/guardian in a similar situation is to trust your instincts'.

As part of our collaborative diversity mentoring programme, each of our leadership team members has been paired with a Which? employee. Our latest update is from Rocio Concha Galguera, director of policy and advocacy, and Aaron West, senior researcher/writer. Aaron said: ‘It’s been really insightful to learn about some of the challenges Rocio has faced from a managerial role and how she has navigated them. This has been my biggest takeaway from the collaborative mentoring scheme. It has been a great opportunity to develop myself and share my experiences, building my confidence going forward in my career.’ Rocio said: ‘We started during a period of significant change: first the lockdown, then hybrid working and all at a time we were going through important organisational changes. It has been very insightful to see through Aaron’s eyes how those changes were seen and impacting others in the organisation.
Introducing Mark, a solicitor in the consumer/landlord and tenant team at Which?. Prior to joining us, Mark spent 10 years as a legal expenses insurer. This wealth of experience has meant he has hit the ground running, helping to broaden the areas where we can offer legal advice to our members. He says: ‘I am adapting to the different ways Which? provides advice to its members – for example, the offering of template letters to assist members in putting legal arguments to a trader they are in dispute with – and it’s really rewarding helping to empower members to enforce their legal rights through the advice I provide them.’
