We’re now open for applications for the Which? Fund. Different groups of consumers can have very different experiences, and some groups - for example, women, people living with disabilities or health conditions, low-income households and members of diverse ethnic communities - can be more exposed to or experience different types of consumer harm than other groups. Through the Which? Fund, the Consumers' Association* is offering new funding to UK charities and universities with exempt charitable status to explore these harms, and to identify pragmatic solutions. What are we looking for? We want to support a small number of research projects aiming to: - Improve understanding of consumer harm, particularly issues affecting diverse and disadvantaged communities - Identify evidence-led, pragmatic solutions to consumer harm - Develop partnerships and encourage collaborative working to provide a more powerful voice for UK consumers from all backgrounds. For more information and to apply visit https://lnkd.in/eXkA7ePt. The deadline for first stage application is 11:59pm on Wednesday,

Say hello to Justin Macmullan. Justin joined Which? last year as one of our principal policy advisers within the consumer rights team. We caught up with him to find out more about his work: 'I'm currently working on our response to a government consultation on consumer and competition policy. The consultation already reflects many Which? proposals, demonstrating the excellent work that has been done across the organisation to evidence the issues facing consumers, develop policy positions and present them to decision makers. ‘Highlights include our reports on creating a successful enforcement system for UK consumers, and 'Are Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) schemes working for consumers?', as well as our high-profile campaign to address fake online reviews. We’ve been making the case for action consistently for several years now, so it’s great to see this concerted effort paying off.’ If you're interested in joining Which? as one of our principal policy researchers, click the link to find out more: https://lnkd.in/g6Syk4Ci
Our investigative research team is responsible for digging into consumer issues and identifying areas of consumer harm. We caught up with Jenny King, who describes some of the varied work the team does, from setting up fake businesses and buying fake reviews to analysing the Covid cover in over 250 travel insurance policies.

Meet Henry R., who joined us as an assistant account apprentice at the beginning of the year. Henry explains why he chose to do an apprenticeship: 'I knew I wanted to get into finance and felt it was the quickest route to becoming qualified. It also meant I was earning while learning.' He has really enjoyed his time so far: 'I expected a certain level of autonomy but have been surprised at how much I have been given and also the extent to which I get to work with stakeholders. I really enjoy working on month-end reporting tasks and compiling the data into accessible, insightful resources.' Congratulations to our latest values sharer of the month, senior events manager Jessie Longhurst. Jessie was nominated for showing bravery and shining a light on the importance of mental health at our recent Let’s Talk event. Her colleagues praised her willingness to go out of her comfort zone, sharing personal experiences and engaging in discussion about a topic that's often not talked about openly. ‘Jessie was an amazing host at our mental health session and always does a fantastic job with organising internal and external events. Jessie was very open about her experiences of managing anxiety. Her bravery will no doubt encourage more conversations about mental health with our peers and help us to think about how we can all be more supportive towards each other.’
Recently our reviews team has stepped into the world of hair and beauty products, and it's provided an opportunity to build on our D&I commitments by creating inclusive test programmes to reach a wider audience. Olivia Woodhouse , researcher/writer, tells us more: ‘For the hair straighteners testing we made sure that we included a range of volunteers, each with a different hair type, from straight to afro. We couldn’t publish results if we hadn’t tested on every type of hair, because one type might react entirely differently to the next. Had we not had the help of our diverse team of volunteers, we wouldn’t have been able to give a rounded review of either product. With lipsticks we had three volunteers, male and female, ranging from 24 to 56, to determine whether age would affect how the lipstick sat on the lips. Often, fine lines can cause lipstick to bleed, affecting how long it will last. It was important for us to see if the winning lippy in our test would score well across all ages.'
Introducing David Greenfield, who joined Which? as a data analyst apprentice earlier in the year. David says: 'I chose an apprenticeship over other options as it offers a blended approach, and you apply what you learn immediately. In addition I am studying towards qualifications that will help me to progress my career.' To register for our future apprenticeships, please visit our careers site https://lnkd.in/d_DpCw4
