How are the career development opportunities at EBRD?

      EBRD reviews

Great career growth with fair promotions and flat culture

      Analyst
      Current employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

It is a flat work environment with no bureaucracy. Hard work in Banking is what matters - it is not about "who" you know. What is valued is your ideas and ability to innovate that is valued most.

      Cons

Promotions are really fast like every 1 year or so from analyst to associate to principal and so forth. Sometimes too fast promotion isn't necessarily good in Banking.

      Cons

Average pay, lots of politics given the large organisation, long working hours if you want to learn and grow but without much recognition unless you can be political

Your feedback on long working hours and the need for innovative approaches to talent retention is valuable. Disappointing and Unchallenging Work Environment

      Principal
      Current employee
      London, England
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Strong Mission and Global Impact Despite internal challenges, EBRD’s mission of fostering economic transition and development in emerging markets can be highly rewarding for those passionate about international development. Diverse and International Environment Working with colleagues from across the globe allows for exposure to different ways of thinking and problem-solving, which can be a positive aspect of the job. Work-Life Balance The Bank promotes flexible working arrangements, which can help mitigate some of the stress that comes from its demanding environment.

      Cons

Poor Management and Lack of Leadership Skills A recurring complaint is that people without proper managerial skills are often promoted into leadership roles. This results in inefficiency, poor team morale, and an overall lack of direction. Employees report feeling micromanaged or, conversely, neglected, depending on the team. There seems to be no clear criteria for promoting people to managerial positions, leading to a situation where capable staff are often passed over in favor of less qualified individuals. No Career Progression Career progression at EBRD is another major issue. Employees frequently find themselves stuck in the same role for years, with very few opportunities for advancement. Many individuals remain in the same position for decades, with no meaningful career development or promotion pathways in place. This stagnation can be highly discouraging for ambitious professionals who want to grow and take on new challenges. Internal mobility and promotions are rare, and there is a general sense that career progression is not a priority for management. Demoralizing Environment The combination of poor management, lack of career growth, and a toxic workplace culture creates a deeply discouraging environment. For many, the experience of working at EBRD becomes more about endurance than development, with little reward for hard work or innovative ideas. The bank's rigid structure and unwillingness to adapt to modern management practices leave employees feeling stuck and undervalued. Unnecessary Longevity in Positions It's common to find people who have been in the same role for 10 years or more, which contributes to the stagnation. This lack of turnover, coupled with an outdated approach to talent management, means that fresh perspectives and new ideas are often stifled. The reluctance to shake things up or introduce new ways of thinking makes it difficult for the organization to evolve, and this inertia is felt by staff at all levels.

Working experience depends significantly on the team It is a highly bureaucratic organisation with limited mobility, lack of clarity on career progression and minimal visibility. Despite being an MDB, not as mission-driven as you would expect or hope.

      High Bureaucracy, Limited Growth

      Analyst
      Current employee
      London, England
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Canteen, building, international Stable, flexible work, work-life balance . The organisation is similar to the public sector

      Cons

Large bureaucratic organisation with a highly hierarchical structure and slow decision making. Many processes are repetitive and manual offering limited scope for skill development or role expansion. Career progression is largely dependent on attrition rather than performance, which can result in employees remaining in the same role for years. While salaries are tax-free, the Bank does not pay National Insurance contributions. Employees who wish to qualify for a UK state pension must therefore make voluntary NI contributions themselves, reducing the effective value of the compensation package. Management quality varies significantly across departments, but some areas suffer from unprofessional toxic leadership and a siloed, tribal culture. Certain teams undergo constant restructuring, while others are clearly overstaffed, leading to internal competition for tasks rather than meaningful work. Visibility often matters more than output -those who appear busy without delivering much tend to fit in well. Extended tenure (10+ years) in certain roles appears to correlate with increased resistance to change and a decline in collaborative team dynamics. Internal vacancies are frequently prealigned, with selection outcomes influenced by personal loyalty within the department rather than merit, significantly limiting opportunities. Do not bother to apply. HR support is largely admin and offers limited contribution to career development or merit-based progression. The organisation is heavily influenced by geopolitical considerations. IT systems are outdated, and although automation initiatives are being introduced, there is limited transparency regarding longterm workforce planning reassigning of roles. This work place is suitable for those who can tolerate a toxic culture, are able to play politics and repetitive bureaucratic work for average pay.

      Pros

Very international environment, amazing London office, great canteen, some great people and inspiring people at all level and some projects can be very exciting, expanding institution that got rid of a few toxic senior staff

      Cons

      - Work life balance can be pretty poor in operational teams, some teams are chaotic/toxic due to endless restructuring - Very little meritocracy and slow career progression, demotivating HR policy that promotes hiring of external candidates of mediocre quality vs decent internal ones and offers higher salaries to new joiners vs well performing long standing staff at the same level so may be safe to look for exit options after 3-5 years if you don't have solid promotion prospects. - poor senior management and governance leads to toxic internal territorial infighting - proliferation of poorly designed and often useless processes managed by staff with no real economy or sectoral expertise that make the bank look amateurish with clients - salary and benefits not enough for a family in London unless you have family wealth or another high earning partner - be careful about promises on immigration exemption status for your partner and family members as HR make promises beyond what the can achieve, get advice/support from immigration lawyers. - hypocrisy in the difference of treatment between Palestine and Ukraine - inclusion policy focusing on gender and LGBT that hides the lack of social diversity with big proportion of staff coming from well-off and well.connected families, especially in local offices. - opacity on salaries
