Etsy Engineering Manager interview questions

Keeping Commerce Human, but definitely not the interview process. I've interviewed for two Engineering Manager roles with Etsy over the past year. For one of these I made it to an architecture interview, for the other the role was filled after my phone screen. The communication with their recruitment team is awful. Getting one of them to respond to an email is difficult and frustrating. Even when they ask you a question like your availability for a hiring manager interview, they don't acknowledge your response. I needed to email them again with updated availability because the time slots I originally communicated passed by without me hearing back from them. One of their recruiters no-showed my phone screen because they scheduled it on a company holiday. The emails I eventually received often lacked context and were clearly automated from their internal system. For the role that I made it closest to, I was told I was still a very strong candidate and they wanted me to apply to other management roles - but when I made suggestions I was ghosted... Apparently it's nice working as an Engineer at Etsy if you get past this - but this chaotic hiring process lacks respect. From my perspective as a manager, I would never want candidates applying to my roles to experience what I've experienced with Etsy (twice now).

Applied online, recruiter got back to me in 10 days. The entire process was very organized and all the folks were courteous and listened to you which tells a lot about company culture. Though I did not get through, the recruiter did schedule a call to let me know that they decided to extend offer to another candidate in the timely manner. Most of other companies don’t even bother to reply if you are not through. The entire process took 2 weeks time (I had multiple offers and they did speed up the interview loop). Details of rounds: * screening round with hiring manager: 45 minutes and questions were related to team management, handling conflicts, etc. * Main interview loop: 1) system design: questions are mostly asked based on the role. Try to explore more on the domain you will be put in 2) product round: questions are mostly around how you balance product with tech debt, how you will evangelize your team, expectation on changing priority, etc 3) project deep dive: This is about taking an existing feature/system that you worked on and discuss that architecture with team. There will be design questions around choices made 4) cultural fit/collaboration: this round is another behavioral round. Go through core values of etsy and be prepared to answer questions related to leading people 5) leadership: deep dive into values of a leader, leadership style and principles I had a very good experience. Though I did not get through, I did meet some wonderful people and I hope to stay in touch with them.
