Here at JustGiving we practice a peer-to-peer interview model to ensure a consistency of quality across our developer intake. Coding challenges are reviewed separately by two members of the team in rotation to ensure the integrity of our process.
When an applicant meets our development team face-to-face we aim to ensure they understand the fundamentals of the C# language and surrounding environment. When it comes to the white-board exercise we communicate clearly at the outset that the developers are not concerned with syntax, whilst stating that although code does not have to compile it must be recognisable as C#.
The purpose of the pairing exercise is to encourage the applicant to feel supported at all times. We encourage the candidate to engage with us, to feel at ease and to understand that their thought process and work ethics will allow them to thrive in our culture.
It is inaccurate that we were looking for a software developer for 6 months without success. We are pleased to have hired 10 top-tier software developers across our C# back-end, Javascript / Angular.js front-end and Xamarin teams in the last 6 months alone without seeing any attrition from those teams in the last 12 months – an achievement we are particularly proud of when compared to the market-average!
