      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Shopify (Ottawa, ON) in Feb 2020

      Interview

There are quite a few steps in the hiring process for this job. Along with providing a resume you are required to complete a typing test and send the results. You are also encouraged to create a free Shopify site for a fictional brand for them to "get to know you better" and for you to play with the site builder. I sent my application on Dec. 2nd, 2020 I heard back on Dec. 24 from a recruiter who said there was an overwhelming amount of applicants but I was still being considered and would hear back early in 2021. After reading the glassdoor reviews for this position I didn't think it sounded like a positive work environment and it sounded like the compensation did not meet the job requirements. Since it is a pandemic and it's been hard to land an interview anywhere I thought I should still give it a shot. I heard back from a recruiter on Feb. 10 saying they were still interested and would follow up in a week to schedule an interview. on Feb 17th she sent me a link to schedule a virtual interview as well as access to the "Support Launchpad" which was basically a page detailing the benefits of the job. I don't want to lie at this point even though I was skeptical about the position I was feeling excited to possibly join Shopify. Finally, I had the first interview on Feb 22nd which is called the life story interview I believe. It was pretty nice because they told you exactly what you should do to prepare for this interview. Essentially they just wanted to hear about your recent experiences and what you will take from them to Shopify. I have a graduate level education and quite a bit of experience so I thought a casual chat about myself was no biggy. I was told the interview would be 30 minutes long and was scheduled for Feb. 22. I reviewed my answers wore an interview outfit and researched the company etc. I received a call from a recruiter saying it would be a short chat. She asked me about the weather and proceeded to talk about it for 10 minutes (usually a normal ice-breaker for interviews). Then she moved into the first question about my previous work experience and what I could bring. I was explaining that the year prior I was attending school and had two different part time jobs and three volunteer experiences. It seemed like she didn't actually want to hear what I had to say because she cut me off quite quickly by saying "wow it sounded like you were really busy can you tell me how you cope with stress so that you don't become overwhelmed". I quickly made up some answer about how I dealt with COVID lockdowns and then she asked if I had any questions. Start to finish the "chat" was 17 minutes and I'm pretty sure the weather portion took up 10 of them I'm assuming she didn't like my personality; I'm quite confused because I have so much customer service experience and I have a B.A. and grad certificate and this is an entry-level job. My best guess was that she didn't think I would be good socially over the phone because I was a bit nervous.... because it was an interview? The next day I was told they wouldn't be moving forward with my application. I was not crushed because from Glassdoor reviews it sounds like a toxic work environment for the "Support Advisors" or "Gurus". The worst part is that at the end of March a recruiter emailed me again trying to arrange an interview for the same position. I responded by asking if it were a mistake and if they would like to take a second look at my application if she could provide feedback from my first interview. Days later she responded by saying it was indeed her mistake and they don't want to interview me again. Strangely the next day she emailed me AGAIN to tell me in a different way that yes it was a mistake and they don't want to hire me. It was like adding insult to injury.
