      Customer Support Engineer Interview

      27 Feb 2016
      Anonymous employee
      Dublin, Dublin
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Tableau Software (Dublin, Dublin) in Feb 2016

      Interview

Phone interview followed by an on-site interview. The phone interview was just 45 minutes - technical questions and an introduction to the company. The onsite interview lasted nearly 3 hours and was the longest interview I've ever done... The 1st part was technical - 3 scenarios to troubleshoot. And the 2nd part consisted of fairly standard interview questions, but it was very long.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The technical questions asked during the phone interview related to databases, networking and analytics. Some questions were: what is a field? what is a column? what is aggregate data? when do you use the Group By clause? What is a cube? What is active directory? describe how a proxy works? what is kerberos and what port does it use? how can you check all the open connections on a machine? what is average and what is median? what are dimensions and metrics? etc During the onsite interview I was given 3 scenarios to troubleshoot (an error when installing a desktop programme; hostname couldn't be resolved by a browser; database error). I could ask questions and I was supposed to talk them through my thinking process while trying to find a solution. None of the problems were particularly difficult - you just need to know the basics of managing desktop applications (Run a program as administrator, pull up Task manager to shut down a process etc), the basics of networking (how to find DNS server settings) and the basics of databases + 3 tier web architecture for the 3rd task. After the technical questions there were lots of standard interview questions like: tell us about yourself, why did you apply, what are your strengths and weaknesses, give an example of great customer service you provided, give an example of great customer service you received, give an example of a disagreement you had with a colleague and how you handled it, give an example of something you improved in your current job, how do you see yourself in 5 years and many others. The onsite interview went on for full 3 hours...
