      Inside Sales Representative Interview

      11 May 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Trulia (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2014

      Interview

The entire process took about 3 1/2 weeks. Completely disorganized process, no one there really knew what the protocol was. First interview was a phone interview, straight forward and more informational. Next, was an in person interview at the downtown SF office. Met with a team leader who looked to be right out of college he explained the job role and then I shadowed a rep for about 20 minutes. Let's be clear here the inside sales role is nothing more than a boiler room sales position. 80+ calls a day with maybe if you're lucky a less than 1% success rate. You are essentially selling ad placement to real estate agents who have been contacted over and over and over again. They don't want to talk to you nor do they want the product. It is a desperate sale with immediate price reductions if there is any disinterest expressed. 3rd interview was with the inside sales manager. To my surprise this was a very casual interview with nothing of real substance explored. When I asked questions about Trulia's future, the customer retention rate, and the employee retention rate I was talked around in circles with no answer given. Red Flag. Then came the question about the compensation package, no answer. Commission schedule, no answer. Red flag after red flag. I received the offer for the job for a salary equivalent to $17.10 an hour and they still did not provide ANY idea of what the commission schedule would be. When I asked for a written commission schedule I was told that could not provide it, company policy. Final red flag. I promptly declined the position and would not recommend this position to anyone unless you are desperate for a job (a not very good one at that). How anyone can live in San Francisco on $17 an hour and MAYBE the possibility of mystery commission is beyond me. The one thing I noticed is the clear difference (class difference if you will) between Trulia Corporate and Trulia Sales. The two offices are night and day. Corporate very posh, long lunches, smiles all around (high pay & stock options); Sales on the other hand was like a college dorm room that reeked of desperation and unhappiness (you could see it on all the faces). Not the cohesive team environment they project. Advice to management...Get real.. employees at In and Out Burger make more than this. The sales team pays your bills, and boost the stock price, treat them as such.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

No difficult questions, typical sales interview. I think the difficult questions in the interview were the questions I asked management about the company and the role. They kept putting me off and said great question for the next interview.

      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Trulia (Bellevue, WA)

      Interview

Had initial phone call with hiring manager and was asked to come in for in-person interview. Interviewed with two sales managers, both of which were long-term employees of both Trulia and Market Leader. The person leading the interview asked what I thought of Trulia and as I mentioned a person who worked their I started to say "they seem to like it" but before I could finish my sentence was told "not to compare myself with _____" which I found somewhat offensive. They were also very adamant about me speaking like a normally would to a friend, asking somewhat odd questions to see how I would react. They both also made it clear that they track the times you work and go on breaks despite being on salary (which is lower than average) with a subtle expectation that you be passionate and loyal to the company before even being hired. I asked about employee retention as well as criticism about their business model and they seemed to get a bit defensive (news flash: I am interviewing your company just like you are interviewing me). I tried to keep the tone positive throughout, but overall, not a great experience. I definitely got the feeling they use sales people here, demanding long hours, high results and a high amount of brand loyalty.

Tell me why you value recognition over other achievements, in your own words, and don't sound like a sales person.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Trulia (Denver, CO) in Nov 2014

      Interview

Intensive. There are through background checks. FBI level. But they are really concerned not just in your ability to sell but to do so with honesty and integrity. They really want employees to stay with the company and invest in each others futures. They look for matches to their culture and ethical code

      Interview

I had a phone interview which was pretty basic. They had me take an online test that involved simple math and critical thinking. The group interview was a little intimidating, but easy if you're a decent sales person. Called me back with an offer later that evening.
