Born in the North East in 2004, CPI was initially funded by UK Regional Development Agency ONE NorthEast to support the growth and development of advanced manufacturing in the UK by translating research from academia through technology readiness levels to commercial feasibility – also known as bridging the 'valley of death'. Since then, we've evolved into a team of radical thinkers solving the biggest global challenges in healthcare and sustainability through science and technology innovation. Today, CPI consists of ten national innovation centres and regional offices, each with its own incredible capabilities spanning AgriFoodTech, energy storage, HealthTech, sustainable materials, and pharma. We do this not only through our innovation expertise and infrastructure, but also by supporting our communities with STEM skills, industry foresighting, investing in promising early-stage deep tech companies, and through partnerships with investors, academia, and government. Since 2011, we’ve operated as a founding member of the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult, alongside the Manufacturing Technology Centre, Warwick Manufacturing Group, Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Nuclear AMRC, National Manufacturing Institute Scotland, and the National Composites Centre. We receive approximately one-third of our funding from the HVM Catapult, with the rest of our income from commercial and collaborative research and development projects. As a social enterprise, our profits are reinvested in our people and projects to catalyse even more innovations that improve our world.
