Pros

My colleagues were very supportive.

Cons

CEO is not holding Executives accountable for the poor workplace culture. If you dont agree with management you are side lined and treated differently.

Pros

Committed and caring ground level staff

Cons

Toxic culture. Poor patient care. Undermining Executive team. Do not work for this organisation if you care about patients and your own mental health.

Pros

Exposure to the most challenging types of behaviour. High acuity mental illness presentations. Increased knowledge of the law and sentencing processes. Decent pay as you stay, regular CPD. Secure car parking. Friendly security staff.

Cons

Clique difficult to navigate. Wariness of newcomers is painfully clear. Security obligations overtake nursing duties. No management support unless you’re favoured. Micro-management. Supportive of their ‘stars’. Clinical nursing skills not valued or highly regarded. Operates in a bubble, culture of bullying those who are perceived as a threat and anyone who ‘speaks up’ against the ‘stars’. Poor nursing practice reporting should be supported not viewed as ‘snitching’. Career advancement only within that hospital and justice system of mental illness.

Pros

The speech pathology team has an incredible lead/manager who fights for support, resources and advocates for the team. Very diverse experience across the caseload - no two consumers are remotely the same.

Cons

Huuuge culture issue: distinct separation between medical, admin, and allied health teams - very "us and them" mentality and most people working there severely underestimate the important and value of allied health disciplines and see clinicians as a nuisance and burden. Still on the whole a very punitive rather than therapeutic outlook despite the claims of consumer-centred care. Very limited support in most disciplines and you can be left on a unit as essentially the sole clinician in your discipline even as a new grad. Absolutely no room for progression due to constant budgetting issues. Pay is well below industry standard (and I worked there for almost a year before I worked out they were underpaying me). Management generally very tone deaf and ignorant to the needs and attitudes of both staff and consumers (despite these being raised directly with management).

Toxic leaders

Business outlook

Pros

Caring committed clinicians. Privileged opportunity to work with trauma

Cons

Executive leadership who don’t work with the clinicians and don’t understand the work or care that can be provided. What once was a great organisation is now led by the head of People & Culture - with no health background. Care has gone backwards with the CEO and others working under a belief that their change is making the organisation better. Talk of a Forensic core model (for 2 years) delivering nothing. Removed all Nurse Practitioners, Speech Pathology and nursing positions. Unheard of for a health service. 700+ nurses and the nursing voice silenced. No recognition of nursing skills and that the service cannot run without them. No nursing voice at Executive and a slow removal of nursing leadership positions despite nurses being the core and major discipline.

Toxic to say the least

Pros

The pay - but don't let it fool you. The organisation is toxic from the top down.

Cons

The organisation's culture is toxic to say the least. In my time at the organisation, I did not come across a single staff member who genuinely enjoyed their role, they were bored, uninterested, uninspired and unsupported. Leadership at the organisation have no insight to issues on the ground with staff on the front line. WHS are unprofessional, have no confidentiality and openly discuss work cover cases in the office. Don't let the salary on offer fool you.. they need something to win people over!
