Avoid at all costs

Pros

Small shops where you get to know each and every customer and they get to know you and the small/close teams you get to work with.

Cons

Always have to work on your own - no form of security Area managers expect you to be their deputies/do their job for them and then get spoken to/treated like dirt on the one occasion you can't help them. Staff hours constantly getting cut No communication from area manager Impossible to achieve required targets when you have to constantly be behind a till

Pros

None readily come to mind as staff discount is the same as on offer from better employers.

Cons

Long hours as you are expected to work more than those advertised. Ideally they would like you to opt out of the 48 hour week. Deputy Managers only paid 25p an hour more than a Sales Assistant and an hourly rate comparable to what other grocery chains pay to Sales Assistants or less in the case of some supermarkets. Plus no company sick pay. Stores understaffed so management have to work 7 days a week in order to " ensure the efficient operation of the business." Lone working for several hours a day as not enough staff or money in wage budget. No travel expenses if sent to another store to train or as cover. Stores are ill-equipped with an old supermarket trolley being used to move stock from the store room to the shop floor. No staff room, just a sink unit in the corner of the warehouse right outside the staff toilet! No staff security lockers for valuables. No where to hang your coat. Staff areas are dirty and poorly maintained. Have to buy your own black top as no uniform provided despite poster on wall saying you are supposed to wear a uniform shirt / polo shirt.

Worst Company Ever

Pros

There are no pros to working for McColl's, they are the worst company you could ever work for. I guess there is one pro and that's the odd nice customer who comes in the shop.

Cons

Minimum wage where supervisors end up with around 10p more than minimum and deputy managers get around 50p more than minimum wage. There are no benefits/perks at all for working at McColl's. You'll work all hours and management pick and choose when you can take a holiday, even when no one else has booked holidays. No social life is allowed if you work for McColl's. Don't try planning days away on your days off, they'll demand you come in if someone doesn't turn up to work or is sick. No nice "please can you come in?". The manager only ever has extra staff in when he's there. If he's off and you need extra staff on delivery days, even if just for a couple of hours then you won't get it. I even raised this complaint with the area manager who didn't care and said to discuss it with the manager... Absolute joke of a company.
