I have been working at Ocado Technology full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    The company shop is alright

    Cons

The engineering department seems to have a bit of a gang problem. The engineers and engineering management seem to resemble those gangs of bullies that you used to encounter in the school playground, who would snigger and make fun of you as you walked past, and laugh at you behind your back. They don't have the slightest shred of respect for people outside of their little "circles" and the Engineering managers are extremely un-approachable and blunt. This i can say for all 4 of them. It's not just a problem with one of them thinking it's alright to bully, it's all of them.

    Advice to Management

I don't know how you screen your people and what kind of personality checks you do, but you better change it to avoid spending all your time recruiting people. Because that seems to be a rather large focus at the moment.

    Pros

Nice and friendly culture to help and encourage software engineers to utilise their knowledge, expend their skill set and release their creativity.

    Cons

There may not have enough room for employees to grow in some team/department/business area.

I have been working at Ocado Technology full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I would definitely recommend friends to work here, I’ve been here a few years and think it’s great
    Great people to work with
Open-ness and willingness to improve as a company
    Low stress work environment
Plenty of opportunities to learn, explore, make mistakes as a developer
Teams are given plenty of freedom to work in a way that makes sense for them
I’ve moved teams internally a couple of times, and I’ve always had support from my team leads and wider company to do so
Giving and receiving feedback is encouraged and managed really well, I’ve found it to be a really positive experience
Never had any problems booking holiday
Flexible working hours (core hours policy allows you to come in and leave when it suits you)

    Cons

Working from home and remote working are generally discouraged
    Maternity/paternity leave is really bad
Whilst engagement in general is really good, I’ve definitely experienced colleagues that aren’t engaged with the job at all, it’s felt like there’s not much discrimination between that staff that are engaged and work hard and encourage others every day, and those that don’t. I think this situation is improving though.
Depending on the team, the out of hours support can be quite demanding (you are paid for this, but I found it affected my personal life too much to be worth it)

    Advice to Management

Allow teams to experiment with remote working more
    Improve your maternity/paternity package

I have been working at Ocado Technology full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great culture, with a real desire to grow. Management are generally as supportive as they can be in offering developers the freedom to explore, experiment and fail.

    Cons

Struggling to recruit and so for a perfectionist the code base can be overwhelming in terms of the volume of technical debt in places. Although I've definitely seen much worse.

    Advice to Management

    Hire people, aggressively hire people

    Pros

Good working environment with lots of different technology to work with

    Cons

Restricted in what you can do even if you a professionally certified as most of Network, Windows etc is done by teams in head office

    Advice to Management

When applying for a new job which is advertised externally & internally why would you make the applicant go through a promotion board
