Pros

Great to have on CV. Learned a lot from the experience which I’ve been able to go on and apply elsewhere. It’s true that you learn as much from poor managers as you do from good ones. I certainly learned how not to people manage and that I need look out for number one in future. Money and benefits are good pros but not worth it in my opinion.

Cons

P&G talk the talk about mental wellness and work-life balance. From my experience I found this to be little more than hot air. My self esteem was completely eroded during my time here and I cried more often than not when I got home from work. People were superficially friendly and caring but would actually use your weaknesses against you if you chose to trust and confide in them. I felt extremely out of my depth due to being put on a large account and customer with very little support (this was a graduate role). The role also wasn’t what I expected - extremely admin and spreadsheet heavy. The company also talks about ‘safe learning spaces’. There was no such thing. I am so relieved to have left this toxic workplace behind me and to be excelling in a new role elsewhere which I love.

Pros

A lot of freedom to lead projectsand work with other teams, groups, sites and countries. Some great people to work with. Site is located in a good area.

Cons

Old school hierarchical elitism from the Oxbridge PhD management. Don’t invest in developing employees which are treated as disposable. Like it or leave. Demoralizingly slow to do anything, from project initiatives to people progression. A career system that encourages people to be publicity machines for their own careers instead of actually doing something constructive. Powerpoint experts who have forgotten any science, engineering or technology, but that’s OK they play the visibility game and get rewarded.

Pros

- Friendly atmosphere within the site - Open door policy between managers & staff - Relatively young site with a lot chance for bonding outside of work - Good benefits like staff shops - Good free private healthcare scheme - Lots of training given to staff

Cons

- If you go to a non red brick uni you come in as a Researcher; if you went to a red brick uni (think Oxbridge etc) you come in as a Scientist. The career advancement from Researcher to a Senior Scientist level may take 15 years whereas comparatively it only takes up to 5 years from a Scientist to go onto Senior Scientist. So for those coming in at the bottom, expect to stay there awhile. - Don't expect a good pay if you start at the bottom. - You are expected to put in the hours.
