    I worked at STMicroelectronics full-time

    Pros

The Bristol site was a really positive working environment for the most part, providing an opportunity to work on challenging engineering projects. The working environment was very pleasant and colleagues almost universally helpful and engaged.

    Cons

Concerns over the strategy and direction of the business, for example projects cancelled very late in the schedule, strategy decisions taking a very long time causing inefficiencies, and poor anticipation of market needs.

    Advice to Management

Greater accountability for middle management, particularly when identifying which opportunities on which to engage engineering effort. Provide a clear mission for smaller sites and empower local management and engineering staff to meet the goals and objectives associated with that mission.

    Pros

Lots of good engineers and interesting work. Flexible working time and reasonable rates of pay.

    Cons

ST has lots of Politics and bad management. Lack of empowerment and lots of management overhead. It's a shame as the engineers are great.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of all the layers, empower your staff.

I worked at STMicroelectronics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Learning and using the latest technology

    Cons

Management, HR that spouted the company line permanently - didnt listen to employees. Complete dis-interest in recognising staff achievements - unless you were in the design team. Lack of pay rises and promotions, lower grade staff had minimal increases, enough to keep them on the bottom of the band levels that was all.

    Advice to Management

Learn to listen to your lower staff, feed that through your middle management and listen all the way up. Dont ignore your talent

I have been working at STMicroelectronics full-time

    Pros

Huge international presence, many experienced engineers, very good equipment available. ST have their own technology line making them leaders amongst only a few semiconductor companies overall.

    Cons

Even though big company, which implies stable employment prospects, they tend to have vast human resource. That is often pointed to when cuts are required to improve financial position.

    Advice to Management

Keep relations to academia as an excellent source of qualified employees. Allow for more opportunities for knowledge sharing between sites through expatriate schemes.

I have been working at STMicroelectronics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people with a lot of different activities and skill sets all in one place. Rather than moving companies for a change of role you just transferred internally.

    Cons

There are a lot of people with too much power and not enough knowledge making company wide decisions and mandating things on others.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the faultless management of the company.

    Pros

The Bristol engineers are (were!) a great bunch - clever, resourceful and have a lot of expertise in their chosen fields. Flexible working time and holidays are a bonus. Pension and other benefits also good.

    Cons

Bristol: it's closing! Otherwise, being French it is overly bureaucratic, IT in particular. There is also too much management hierarchy meaning the CEO and board are disconnected from the engineers.

    Advice to Management

Stop closing site that have the expertise to get the company moving.

    Pros

international environment cutting-edge products still one of the main semiconductor company

    Cons

italian-french company: they are close to both government, so, even if result in business damage, they keep employer in these 2 countries. Management is a caste, so they protect themselves, even if someone did some very bad choices

    Advice to Management

Closing eng site reduces competitiveness and lose of knowledge, competitors thank for this. if business goes bad it is not engs fault, indeed other companies are willing to take them! Management and CEO should be responsible for what happens to business but they never pay for their errors
