At Balfour Beatty, we don’t just build things, we help our customers turn their visions into reality! That’s exactly what our Regional Scotland and Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick teams have done at the Institute of Regeneration and Repair, BioQuarter Expansion. Our customer The University of Edinburgh had a vision to be part of the team to transform Edinburgh BioQuarter into a world-leading, vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood which has the potential to support a community of more than 20,000 healthcare innovators. Today is the final day of Mental Health Awareness Week at Balfour Beatty! Colleagues from across the business worked together to create a fantastic schedule of activities to help raise awareness, signpost our support tools and encourage conversations on this year’s theme ‘anxiety’. From podcasts, live webinars with leading mental health charities, deskercise, ‘start the conversation’ training sessions, toolbox talks to donut walls – it’s been great to see our offices and projects getting involved in such an important topic. #MHAW23
Yesterday our Gender and Allies Affinity Network hosted its first networking event of 2023 to help move the dial on gender diversity. ‘The Power of Connection’, hosted alongside Shepherd and Wedderburn, saw our Non-Executive Director, Louise Hardy and Procurement Lead, Mukta Hashmi join Shepherd and Wedderburn's Iain Drummond to explore the barriers which women in the industry face - highlighting where we're making progress and where there's more to do. Thank you to our speakers on the evening and to everyone who attended making the event such a huge success. We look forward to the next one!
On Friday 2 June, we’re hosting an Armed Forces Insight Day in Cobham (M25 junction 10), to share how a career in infrastructure offers the Armed Forces community a chance to turn their commitment, experience and adaptability to a new challenge. Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week and this year’s theme is anxiety. With over a third of construction workers suffering with elevated levels of anxiety every day, we recognise the importance to educate and raise awareness of mental health within our workforce. We’re proud of our progress so far. We’ve built a network of over 500 mental health first aiders across the UK. Partnered with industry-leading charities such as Mates in Mind to create our ‘Listen, Support, Signpost’ training to develop the skills of our mental health first aiders, and we have delivered 12,000+ ‘start the conversation’ sessions to help break down the stigma associated with poor mental health. Colleagues from across the business have created a fantastic schedule of activities for the week which include podcasts, panel discussions, toolbox talks, local events and more to encourage conversations. If you’re a Balfour Beatty employee, please visit our dedicated site on The Hub to find out more and to get involved. #MHAW23 #BuildingNewFutures

We’ve recently reached a major milestone on the Core Valley Lines Transformation project in South Wales! Canton Rail Depot has been successfully energised, marking the first step of the project’s complex energisation sequence as part of a major upgrade to the Core Valleys Lines, a vital part of the South Wales Metro. Once complete, the scheme will significantly improve connectivity throughout South Wales and enable more frequent services, improve capacity and provide a better customer experience – making it one of the most comprehensive and complex infrastructure rail upgrades in the region for a generation.
