At Howdens, we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact, and Plastic Free July is a great time to reflect on our progress. We’re experimenting and trialling a new recycled polypropylene (rPP) that blends in agricultural waste, cutting fossil-based plastic content by up to 30% without compromising quality. If adopted across our rPP products, it could save 1,184 tonnes of CO₂, the equivalent of taking over 250 cars off the road for a year. We’re also reducing packaging, rethinking design, and improving in-house recycling. Let’s keep moving forward on our Road to Zero! #PlasticFreeJuly #Environment #NetZero
Last month, Howdens took part in Walk This May, encouraging everyone to get moving for both physical and mental wellbeing. To support the initiative and raise money for charity, members of our Wellbeing Team, along with colleagues from across the business, tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks. A special shout-out to James Jessop, who went the extra mile (and then some), completing the Three Peaks, three times over, in just three days, all in aid of CoppaFeel!, #ANDYSMANCLUB and Swaledale Mountain Rescue. In James’ words: "You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice." Huge congratulations to everyone who took part! #Charity #Challenge #Community

Celebrating Our Accreditation on World Menopause Day Howdens recently celebrated our Menopause Friendly Accreditation at the Henpicked Menopause Friendly Employer Awards 2024 – one of around 100 UK companies to achieve this! 🙌 The assessors at Henpicked praised our efforts, highlighting how we have embraced this work in a way that fits with our culture, the resources and facilities we've developed, and the sponsorship from our Executive team. This is a great result for our employee gender working group. Today, on World Menopause Day, our work continues with a Menopause Masterclass for our employees, themed ‘Movement & Exercise’. The class will share top tips to ease symptoms and boost long-term health.
This week, Howdens spread joy by gifting nearly 14,000 hampers across the entire business! A heartfelt way to celebrate and appreciate our incredible team this Christmas. 🎄🎁
Despite affecting about half of the world’s population, menopause isn’t talked about as much as it should be. At the end of last year, we committed to becoming a menopause-friendly business, as we want all our employees to feel able to talk about the subject, receive support when needed, and be equipped to support others. The accreditation covers elements such as ensuring everyone has a level of awareness and can support their teams appropriately. We continue with Menopause Awareness training and have published Menopause Guidelines for managers and employees. We hosted a masterclass webinar focusing on lifestyle and nutrition, with all employees invited, irrespective of gender or age.
At Howdens, you are valued, for who you are and the contribution you make to our customers. We aim to support you to give the best of yourself and to achieve the best possible results. As part of our EDI strategy, our gender sponsor, Operations Director Julian Lee, and our employee working group have today hosted an 'open to all' event at one of our manufacturing sites in Yorkshire and via live stream. We ran a workshop on confidence and a panel of our female managers shared their inspiring stories. Julian said: “I’m proud to be leading our work on gender equality and am encouraged by the passion and insight of the working group. By working and learning together on important topics such as Menopause, we better understand the challenges our people can face. We continue to act and develop plans to improve in areas where we can make the greatest difference and impact.” #IWD2023 #WorthwhileForAllConcerned #EmbraceEquity
Howdens have ranked 10th in the Best Companies 2022 Best Big Companies to Work For list! This award is based on the results from the Best Companies engagement survey that we ran in March where our employees told us about their experience of working at Howdens. Not only have we beaten our 2020 ranking of 14th spot, but the award is a testament to the strong workplace culture that we have developed over the years. Howdens was also one of five companies shortlisted for the Best Companies Giving Something Back Award. This award recognises a company’s innovative approach to supporting charities and their local communities, and efforts to lessen their impact on the environment. #BestCompanies2022 #Award #Recognition
