This is Margaret. Margaret works at #SelfridgesLondon as a Sales Associate on Kids, and this is a snap of her enjoying one of our Career Milestones afternoon tea events back in May. Our Career Milestones afternoon tea is for team members who are celebrating 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and even 50 years at Selfridges, and form part of our Career Milestones Menu of benefits for long service! After the economic recession of the early nineties, Margaret decided to close the doors on her clothing business in South East London at the age of forty-eight. However, it wasn’t long before she landed a job with us here at Selfridges. Twenty-five years on, Margaret is happier than ever in her life and work, and shares her wonderful story with our partners over at Restless. We have banned all single-use beauty wipes from sale and use in our beauty halls! As part of Project Ocean (our long-term campaign to protect our oceans from over-fishing and plastic pollution), we have banned all single-use, plastic-based beauty wipes from sale and use in our Beauty Halls. We have replaced all single-use wipes with recyclable or re-usable alternatives. Our latest commitment is part of our ever-evolving plan to change the way we shop and to offer our customers more sustainable options. Daniella Vega, Director of Sustainability at Selfridges, said: “Single-use beauty wipes have been a staple of many beauty drawers, but they are incredibly harmful to the environment. During a recent Selfridges team beach clean, we saw first-hand the impact they have on our waterways and we were even more motivated to remove them from our stores. We’re proud to have made this commitment and to continue to build on our legacy of sustainability leadership.” #MondayMotivation #TeamSelfridges

On Sunday 6 October, team members in #SelfridgesLondon hosted a pop-up supper club in The Corner Restaurant in collaboration with Mike’s Table to provide a dining experience for people who, for various reasons, are socially isolated and don’t get the opportunity to eat in a restaurant as part of their day-to-day. Mike’s Table is a non-profit social enterprise that hosts pop-up supper clubs using donated food that would otherwise go to waste. Each supper club ticket sold funds the same restaurant experience for someone else for free. Mike’s Table work with charities and organisations supporting people who are socially isolated to provide an inclusive, social and enjoyable experience. Not only was this an amazing opportunity to brighten someone’s day and make a difference, it also helped champion our commitment to sustainability by reducing food waste (and getting creative with the outcome!) Our team members created a relaxed atmosphere for our guests, immediately putting them at ease and settling them in for a fantastic evening with brilliant conversations and amazing food.
We are really proud to announce the launch of Chatty Café in our very own Gran Café in Selfridges Birmingham! Every Wednesday we will designate one table to be a Chatter & Natter table. This means that customers who fancy a chat, feel a little lonely or want to have a cuppa with a stranger, have the space and opportunity to do so - who doesn't love a good natter every once in a while? Further to this, Selfridges Birmingham are going to be replicating this in their team member canteen to encourage people to have a chat over lunch with someone they haven't met before. Sometimes, simply talking, even if it's just a general chat, can really help to lift someone who might be feeling lonely or suffering with a problem in silence. We really look forward to seeing people make use of the space, so please feel welcome to do so next time you're in store on a Wednesday!
Organised by our Green Warriors, team members from across the business spent a full day cleaning the beach at Erith Yacht Club, and what an eye opening experience it was! They collected 286 plastic bottles along with hundreds more bottle tops and plastic straws. Some of their more unusual finds included: 1 full car bumper, 2 handbags and lots of coconuts (yes, coconuts!). Our Green Warriors do so much to help us drive our sustainability agenda, Buying Better, Inspiring Change. Not only do they take part in regular beach cleans like the one you see here, they help us make changes as a business too. Did you know that it was our Green Warriors who came up with the idea of recycling coffee cups to create our iconic yellow Selfridges bags?
