Celebrating and driving gender equality is extremely important to us at Tesco. That’s why we’re passionate about supporting International Women’s Day. This year, the theme is ‘Accelerate Action’. It’s all about doing everything we can to break down the barriers to gender equality, as well as getting behind strategies, resources and activity that positively impact the success of women. We want to motivate and inspire everyone to fulfil their potential at Tesco. And we’re committed to creating a workplace where women have the role models, development and opportunities to help them progress. One of our initiatives is our Women’s Development Programme, where women get the tools, visibility, and support to help drive their career forward. Tesco is also part of the 30% Club, a campaign group of Chairs and CEOs taking action to increase gender diversity on boards and senior management teams.
At Tesco, we were the first UK retailer to publicly publish food waste data of its own operations and we are continuing to work closely with suppliers to halve our food waste. We have taken a major step forward in reaching this target with 117 of our suppliers – a record number – now signed up to record and report on wasted food. This means that more than 60 per cent of Tesco’s fresh sales by volume in the UK are provided by suppliers reporting on food waste, and last year we reduced the amount by 126,312 tonnes compared to our baseline year. “We know more must be done. That’s why we want to continue building on that momentum and work with others to encourage them to record and report their food waste data. Only then can we see what action is needed and where in the supply chain requires the most work.” - Christine Heffernan, Tesco Group Communications Director. We’re delighted to be the nutrition partner of the Sustainable Foods Conference, which plays such a crucial role in highlighting the importance of a sustainable diet to both customers’ health and the planet. ”We said that we would aim to increase sales volumes of healthy products to 65% by 2025 and I’m pleased to say that we are on track to achieve this. We see that intervention and innovation are driving positive change and we are learning what is achievable when we create the right conditions. We hope that the progress we are making will now encourage more people across industry and government to collaborate and take the necessary action.” – Ashwin Prasad, Tesco Chief Commercial Officer
We’re relaunching our Tesco Sustainable Pig Group, developed in partnership with our long-term supplier Cranswick.
