We’re celebrating picking up the Environmental Impact Award for our Catchment Systems Thinking project in the Petteril Catchment at the Water Industry Forum 10th Anniversary Innovation Awards. Our investment in the Petteril Catchment - driving innovation using different technologies, nature based solutions and working collaboratively with key stakeholders including Eden Rivers Trust, Natural England and Environment Agency - has allowed us to achieve both water quality and flood reduction benefits. The Petteril project is part of a broader approach to managing catchments in a holistic and integrated manner, also known as Catchment Systems Thinking. This allows us to think differently and deliver environmental and water quality improvements for years to come. A new tree planting project is underway in the Lake District National Park, allowing people to mark a special occasion or celebrate the life of a loved one, whilst also helping to restore the landscape and support upland wildlife. You can select from sessile oak, alder, willow, and rowan, and a dedicated team will also be on hand to offer advice and guidance, and to suggest the most suitable location for your tree.
We recently organised our first Macmillan fundraising event of the new three year partnership, and it did not disappoint! We held an Easter Fair at our head office in Warrington, and as always our employees showed their support and helped us raise an amazing £1,714.15! Thank you to everyone who donated and came to the Easter Fair - and also our team in Whitehaven and our partner, Emcor for helping organise the event!
Awais, one of our mechanical engineers, is training for his apprenticeship and has been busy using our virtual reality welder! This allows our apprentices to get stuck into training without the risk. When our apprentices feel confident, have finished their training and demonstrated the right skills - they can then put their training into reality! We’re part of the Wild Ennerdale partnership and together we have an ambition to bring beavers to Ennerdale in Cumbria. Beavers have evolved to be wetland ecosystem engineers, they alleviate flooding by building dams and bring benefits to water quality. The proposal is to bring three family groups to a new home on a stretch of the River Liza and the hope is they will spark new life into the area. We’ve had a long partnership with Wild Ennerdale and annually support the conservation organisation with funding and staff time. A formal consultation is currently underway to see if the local community supports the vision.
It was fantastic to be recognised at the British Diversity Awards! We were highly commended in the Company of the Year category. Receiving this award is fantastic validation of our efforts so far towards becoming a place of work where everyone can bring their whole selves. We’re also proud to be hosting our first Diversity and Inclusion Summit at Manchester Central on 5 April. The event will bring organisations together to explore how we can offer more opportunities to under-represented communities. Speakers include Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE, Paul Sesay, Business in the Community's Sandra Kerr and our Customer Services and People Director, Louise Beardmore. There’s still time to register, come and join us: http://www.unitedutilitiestv.live/
We are extremely proud of our employees and their continued support to our charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support. In summer we raised a huge £31,104.51 - adding to our growing total of £350,000 since 2017! We had a visit from Nicole at Macmillan to celebrate everything our employees have done so far and also discuss the future fundraising plans for 2022. We are looking forward to organising more fundraising events and increasing the support we can give to people living with cancer across the North West. A huge thank you to all of our employees!

We’re proud to welcome Michelle Davis as our apprentice ambassador. Michelle is Warrington Wolves Women’s captain and has swapped her role as a solicitor and is training to be a firefighter. Michelle knows only too well the benefits of joining an apprenticeship scheme and recently spent time with our apprentices, Ethan and Jess, to discover why they’re enjoying developing their career at United Utilities. We’re recruiting for 66 apprentices located around the North West and we hope Michelle will help us reach a new audience to attract talent and skills for the future. It was fantastic to educate customers of all ages on the importance of thinking before they flush or pour, to help save our sewers. Our sewer monsters, Franken-Foods, Greasy Ghoul, Toiletry Terror and Wet Wiper (and our employees), headed to Manchester Arndale over half term. We hosted a special family-friendly interactive exhibition highlighting the nasty things that are being put down drains and toilets causing 22,000 sewer blockages and 7,000 incidents of sewer flooding to homes and gardens every year. We’d like to say a big thank you to our friendly team for educating customers on how they can stop the block. A thank you also goes to anyone who stopped by to say hello and picked up a free fat trap.
