The landmark Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP) has won the Ground Investigation Project of the Year at the 2021 Ground Engineering Awards. The 110km Haweswater Aqueduct has provided drinking water for people living in North West England for over 60 years and the HARP programme sees six tunnelled sections of the aqueduct replaced. We’ve been recognised for this award thanks to the dedicated integrated HARP ground engineering team (a collaboration between United Utilities, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, British Geological Survey and Wardell Armstrong) which was established to design, procure and manage extensive ground investigations and geophysical surveys.
We’re delighted to have been ranked 7th in the Inclusive Companies Top 50 UK Employers list, recognising our commitment to ensuring United Utilities is a diverse and inclusive workplace. As the highest ranking water and utility company in the list this year – and the only North West-based company in the top 10 – it is encouraging recognition of our work so far. Our people and our customers are at the heart of everything we do, therefore we support all of our employees to feel valued and included so they can bring their whole selves to work, regardless of their gender, age, race, disability, sexual orientation or social background. We’re proud to be supporting a workforce that’s representative of the communities we serve across the North West and where diversity is embraced.
We are proud to have once again joined forces with five high schools from Warrington to help and support potential engineers of the future. 80 students from five schools, who are part of The Challenge Academy Trust (TCAT), are working with us over a period of 16 weeks to find engineering solutions to water and wastewater problems. This special partnership is now in its fifth year and was set up to get young people interested in a STEM career. Click the link to find out more.
Fantastic news last night as our marketing and communications team took home the Best In-House Team award at the Prolific North Marketing awards. The team are responsible for all of our customer campaigns, communications, employee engagement and digital activity and have had some great successes this year. Some highlights include hosting customer and employee events, launching successful behaviour change campaigns and enhancing our digital self-serve customer channels. A big well done to all the team.
Last week we supported Brake Road Safety Week, and the theme this year was Road Safety Heroes. At United Utilities we believe nothing we do is worth getting hurt for and we want to make sure that everyone gets home safe and well. We asked our employees to pledge how they will be safer on the road this year. Not only that, we shared videos on road safety and visited our operational sites. Thank you to everyone who got involved in Road Safety Week. #RoadSafetyWeek

Our apprentices and graduates recently spent a week at Outward Bound in Cumbria. This gave them the opportunity to get to know each other, take part in outdoor activities and classroom sessions. We can’t wait to welcome them back and help them apply what they have learnt into their roles. #OpportunityOnTap
