Today we are taking part in International Women's Day and celebrating the amazing women at United Utilities doing ground breaking and incredible work! We are proud to introduce Amelia, our first female mechanical engineer! "I’m loving my role here, it’s even better than I expected. It’s great that it’s so varied and gives me a chance to learn in a classroom-style environment whilst also getting me out on site. If it’s something you think you’ll enjoy, it’s really worth trying. Engineering is a rewarding role for me, plus the company and the work is so good.” We are committed to reaching and recruiting from every community and supporting employees to achieve their full potential, ensuring they feel valued and included, regardless of their gender, age, race, disability, sexual orientation, or social background. Gaby has become our first female HGV apprentice driver. She’s followed in her dad’s footsteps and is enjoying developing and learning new skills. “I’m a confident driver but moving something that’s so much bigger was nerve-wracking at first, especially when I went out on my own. The company has provided me with all the support I need, so I can complete my training and pass my tests.” We’re looking for fantastic people to help deliver a great service to our customers and we’re committed to reaching and recruiting from every community and supporting employees to achieve their full potential, ensuring they feel valued and included, regardless of their gender, age, race, disability, sexual orientation, or social background. We’re proud to be creating 30 Green Apprenticeships, to help us go carbon neutral by the end of this decade. Scientists, fleet technicians and engineers will be valuable roles as we focus on new innovations to enhance the environment. We were the first water company to be given the gold standard stamp of approval for our science-based carbon targets and in our bid to reach net zero from 2030 we’re planting one million trees, switching the our entire fleet of vehicles to run on electricity or alternative fuel and restoring 1,000 hectares of internationally important peat bog, which is perfect for capturing carbon. If you know someone who’d like to join us an apprentice, search unitedutilities.com/apprenticeships.
Last week our apprentices were busy celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2022. The theme this year was Build the Future, and to represent this our apprentices helped spread wild flower seeds on a specialist wild flower area at our head office in Warrington, highlighting how apprenticeships help grow skills. Not only that, Speakers for Schools held a virtual work experience session with over 120 students, we held a diversity and inclusion webinar, and in collaboration with Cognizant we helped aspiring apprentices with their applications. To end the week our apprentices attended a Facebook Live with Trudy Harrison MP for Copeland and Alex Burghart MP. A huge thank you to all of our apprentices for getting involved!
We’ve recently recruited another 22 new leakage apprentices to join our 185 strong leakage taskforce – helping us find more leaky pipes to protect the North West’s water resources. Benjamin and his leak detective colleagues have saved 530 million litres in repaired leaks since April 2021.With 26,000 miles of pipework criss-crossing the North West, Benjamin has enjoyed the challenges and learning more about leak detection techniques including using listening sticks, new innovative technology, and not forgetting meeting our leak detecting sniffer dogs.

As part of our journey to reduce emissions and reach net zero by 2030, we have pledged to plant one million trees and create 550 hectares of woodland. As part of this commitment, we have created an urban forest and memorial area at our head office in Warrington. We have planted native trees which will flourish in the wetland, encouraging biodiversity and capture carbon. Over time, it will develop into a natural haven and be an area for our employees to enjoy. Not only this, the memorial area will give employees the chance to plant a tree in memory of a fellow colleague as a place to remember them, on the site they worked together. Thank you to everyone who created the urban forest.
Amazing news as our customer service team took home the Best Use of Technology award, jointly with IDenteq, at the Utilities and Telecomms Awards! A huge well done to all the team! #U&TAwards
