I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at Genentech in May 2012
Interview
I had an initial phone interview and then two in-person interviews for this position. First part of the interview was with a supervisor one-on-one from three different groups within the department. Second part was with a panel of three technicians. The people were super friendly and the culture was very respectable.

Question 1
The tech panel asked very detailed situational and scenario questions. One such question: "if you were doing a project with a given deadline, would you try to crunch it out to get it done by the deadline or be past the deadline with better results?" Be prepared to know what steps you would take to troubleshoot an issue with some process. Provide as many details and examples of you using your technical expertise. They were looking for someone who was technically adept as well as a good team player and collaborator.
Very hard. Asked a ton of hard questions I did not really study for, interviewers were really nice though but the questions during the interview were too hard. Would recommend to study a ton of science related questions

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Genentech (South San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2014
Interview
I had a phone interview which lasted about an hour, and then less than a week later, I came in for a 6 hour interview from 10-4pm. I spoke the hiring manager, HR representative, 2 skip level managers, and a senior scientist for 30-45 minute interviews, and then had a lunch interview with 5 RAs who would be my peers. Some of the interviews were more personality-based, chatting and get to know each other, whereas others were technical. Before I came for the interview, I studied up on each person and previous work experience in order to speak in detail about the science and technical aspects.
