Today is International Women in Engineering day! We’re celebrating our women engineers, and all the amazing work they do to support our business, day-in, day-out. But this year in particular, our focus is looking towards the future - and the role engineering plays in protecting water for the generations to come across our region. Our engineering roles cover lots of different areas and are instrumental in the development and delivery of our innovation. And by using the latest technology, they’re able to enhance the way we operate and maintain our assets.
The 2020s will be a critical and decisive decade for climate action – and water is at the centre of it all. If we don’t act now, we could face water shortages within the next five years. Join our Chief Executive, Peter Simpson, on the 22-23 June to discuss the Critical Climate Decade and the role of water in the climate crisis. The conference is co-hosted with Anglian Water and will feature academic and industry experts as we aim to find interdisciplinary solutions to cross-sector water challenges. Join virtually or in person – simply register for your free ticket below here - https://lnkd.in/euyZXAPU
The East of England receives around a third less rainfall than the rest of the country, making it the driest region in the UK and officially water stressed. Climate change is accelerating the problem, and our region’s fast population growth adds extra pressure – meaning if we don’t take action now, we will run out of water within 10 years. This Water Saving Week, we’re highlighting the importance of using water responsibly for our customers, by making free water-saving garden kits available and encouraging them to make the switch to a smart water meter. But we’re also working hard at Anglian Water to protect this precious resource – building hundreds of kilometres of new pipeline to move water around our region, using innovative smart water networks to predict and prevent leaks, and much more. We’re feeling proud of teams right across Anglian Water today. We’ve just heard that we’ve been shortlisted for a whopping 13 awards at this year’s Water Industry Awards – our sector’s flagship awards scheme 🎉 In what’s been a challenging year for everyone, we’re delighted to be recognised for our purpose-driven and innovative approaches to areas as wide-ranging as net zero carbon, natural capital, drinking water, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, smart water networks, pollution mitigation, leakage, resilience and asset management. A special mention too to our shortlisted Rising Star of the Year, Sustainability Manager Craig Hopkinson, who’s really made his mark since joining us in 2019 and is now helping our progress to net zero by 2030 on our biggest infrastructure project, the Strategic Pipeline Alliance. We know we achieve most when we work in partnership – so a big thank you and well done too to our partner nominees including Business Modelling Associates, Samotics, Atkins, Ovarro and Binnies.
Our CEO, Peter Simpson, was honoured to join HRH The Prince of Wales and Clare Shine, director of CISL, recently at the launch of a ground-breaking innovation hub for SMEs at the new Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) headquarters, Entopia. This world-first sustainable office retrofit has breathed new, #lowcarbon life into a 1930s former telephone exchange in the centre of Cambridge to house CISL's staff, and a new collaboration platform to accelerate small business innovation on sustainability. Speaking following the launch, Peter said: “His Royal Highness’s forward-thinking work over many decades has driven enormous progress on conservation, biodiversity and a just transition to a low carbon economy. It was inspiring to hear his vision for the centre, and to be able to speak with him about this and other areas of sustainability.”
Earlier this month we hosted our first ever hybrid Water Connect event in partnership with Water Innovation Network and Innovate UK. We were joined by subject matter experts, and a wide range of representatives from our value chain, and the innovation community, for a full day of activity, exploring new ways to drive real change in our region and beyond. Lindsey Taylor, Head of Innovation Engagement, Anglian Water said, "Events like Water Connect are so important to us as they provide us with access to our existing and future supply chain through which we can collectively innovate and transform our organisations". Check out our video to find out more about Water Connect and the importance of collaborating with our existing, and prospective, suppliers to build strong relationships and work together to make positive impact on our customers, communities and environment.
We’re celebrating two awards at this year’s Utility Week Awards! We were absolutely thrilled to be named Utility of the Year, with the judges citing our commitment to delivering for the environment and communities and our consistently innovative approach to our sector’s challenges. With a record-breaking number of entries into the awards this year, this is a particularly proud moment – made even better by being able to reunite with the rest of our industry at the ceremony in London last night. After a challenging year for collaboration with coronavirus restrictions, we’re also very proud that our Integrated Metering and Developer Services alliance with Kier and Clancy won Team of the Year, for its work on the fastest smart meter rollout programme in the country. We have recently launched our new five-point plan for innovation acceleration, which sits alongside our plans for green and community recovery from Covid-19. In the face of unprecedented challenges such as climate change, innovation is more important than ever, and for us that means getting our whole business and supply chain thinking differently. With the support of initiatives like Ofwat's Innovation Fund and the new national centre for innovation excellence, Spring, we're driving unprecedented levels of collaboration and innovation across not only Anglian Water Services, but the whole water industry. "We innovate so tomorrow's customers don't pay the price for actions we didn't take today." At Anglian Water, we provide an essential service to nearly seven million people across the East of England and Hartlepool - but it's not just our customers who rely on us. We've long been acutely aware of our responsibility to the environment, and it's this responsibility that drives so much of what we do, as well as our purpose: to bring environmental and social prosperity to the region we serve through our commitment to Love Every Drop. That's why we've set up a whole new Directorate called Quality and Environment, which will lead the way on our environmental work. Our new Director of Quality and Environment, Dr Robin Price, has written a blog for WildEast, setting out his long-term vision for environmental prosperity in our region.
