#NationalVolunteersWeek is here, and we’re excited to be celebrating the spirit of giving back to communities across the region. This week some of our colleagues rolled up their sleeves to take part in a litter pick in Peterborough to support a local RiverCare & BeachCare group, where they collected and cleared a large amount of rubbish along the banks of the River Nene, making a real difference to the local community and environment. But it isn’t just volunteer’s week where our colleagues get involved. All year round our people give their time and skills through our employee volunteering programme Love to Help. Anglian Water recognises that volunteering doesn't just have a huge positive impact on the places we live and work, it is also important for our staff and their wellbeing. That’s why our volunteering programme offers employees time each year to spend doing volunteering activities, either as part of a team or individually. Love to Help enables our people to support causes they are passionate about, and make a difference to their local environment. Volunteering is about more than just giving back – it's about coming together. It is one of the many benefits of working at Anglian Water. Last financial year, our colleagues collectively volunteered 600 days and supported nearly 100 not-for-profit organisations. As part of our yearly wellbeing plan, we’ve been hosting webinars and sharing advice for colleagues around the importance of physical health and how we can look after ourselves. Last week we hosted a webinar for colleagues to break the stigma around men’s physical health and were joined by ex-professional rugby player Kenny Logan who spoke about his personal journey with prostate cancer. He busted some myths around what’s involved in prostate screening and spoke about the importance of getting tested and looking after ourselves. Thank you Kenny for joining us and talking about such an important topic with our colleagues. Over the next couple of months we’re continuing the conversation around the importance of physical health before we start to look at social wellbeing in the summer. This week, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced three new designated bathing waters in the Anglian Water region 🏊 Manningtree Beach in Essex, the River Cam at Sheep's Green in Cambridge and the River Stour at Sudbury in Suffolk are among those to be officially designated ahead of the 2024 bathing season. Over the last twelve months, we have been working closely with local river groups, providing water quality testing to help support their application to DEFRA. We recognise the value bathing water spots have for our communities and are fully supportive of those wanting to apply for designation for their local stretch of river. Central to our hashtag#GetRiverPositive commitment, we've pledged to create more opportunities for everyone to enjoy our region's rivers by ensuring 90% of the population live within an hour’s drive of a bathing site by 2030. This year, the theme of the International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress & Exhibition is ‘Shaping the Water Future’. Although it's is a global event, the theme couldn't be more pertinent for us here in Anglian Water, as we prepare to deliver a plan worth £9bn to help tackle the dual challenges of drought and flooding brought on by climate change, prepare for an extra 700,000 more people coming to live in our region over the next 20 years, and enable environmental enhancement and nature recovery. The IWA Congress attracts thousands of leading professionals and academics, focussed on collectively building innovative solutions to global water problems, and crucially, implementing those solutions quickly. As a key part of the event, the UK Pavilion will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, case study demos. There'll also be multiple networking events to showcase UK innovation, so as well as learning from others we'll share areas where the UK is leading the field such as nature recovery, climate adaptation and creating a water resilient future. Get involved in shaping the water future of water - https://lnkd.in/eU-RiKPg alongside us and British Water, NWG (Northumbrian Water Group), Scottish Water, Severn Trent, South West Water, United Utilities, Wessex Water and Yorkshire Water. Key sponsors will also attend (including Arup, AtkinsRéalis, Capgemini, Morrison Construction, Ofwat Innovation Fund, RSE, The Scottish Government and WRc Group)"

Last month, delegates from the World Water Tech conference came to visit our water recycling centre at Fornham All Saints. These were both international and locally based individuals, including many from our innovation supply chain partners, and they were able to get up close and personal with our operations and innovation work. The delegates were able to experience the day to day running of the site, the constraints and challenges we face, and hear about many of our active innovation projects from members of the team. They were also able to explore the nearby greenhouses that are heated by the energy naturally created as part of the wastewater process, reducing the carbon footprint by 75% compared to a standard heated greenhouse. This project is a prime example of how the Water and Agricultural sectors can look to collaborate to reduce their environmental impact.
