Meet Mandy Morris, our Head of Finance for Procurement and Technology. Mandy joined us in 2010 and we are delighted to share her story about becoming a Woman in Finance at Tesco: "It’s really easy for people to be intimated by the term “Finance” and I have been completely guilty of it as it took me a long time to get the nerve up to move back into Finance after working elsewhere in the business for five years. We’re sending a huge congratulations to Rachael, one of our distribution graduates who won Graduate of the Year last night at the Rising Star Awards 2018. “I feel extremely honoured to have won the Graduate of the Year Award and I am incredibly grateful to have such recognition for the work I have done. I’d like to thank all of the Tesco Distribution team for their continued support throughout my time on the Graduate Programme and for giving me a world of opportunities. I am very proud to be part of this fantastic team and of the Tesco community.” Using multiple colleague inputs and her own diagnostics, she worked alongside our Group Procurement, Responsible Sourcing and Ethics teams to build a plan to implement change. As a result of this successful project, a new career pathway will be launched for our agency colleagues, guiding principles to our Distribution Centres, and a Level 3 Apprenticeship is being built for our Agency Supervisors. Well done Rachael!
We would like to wish our very own Rachael good luck after being nominated for the 2018 Rising Stars Retail Awards Graduate of the Year. Rachael shares her experience with us below: “I joined the Tesco Distribution graduate scheme in 2016, my first placement was in Livingston Distribution Centre. Nine months later I was asked to lead a project within Distribution, making sure our colleagues felt secure both contractually and culturally. Since the project I have returned to a Lead Team role as a Shift Manager within one of our Distribution Centres. I have thoroughly enjoyed every part of my time on the Graduate Programme. I have been exposed to a wide range of opportunities outside of my programme. Leading the project within Distribution has by far been my most proud achievement. Being able to implement change across our network of 28 Distribution and Fulfilment Centre’s in order to help positively impact the lives of thousands of colleagues. I can’t imagine getting opportunities of this scale and scope in any other company and feel incredibly proud to work for Tesco.”
We were delighted to welcome over 500 people – a record-breaking number – from the Czech Republic, India, Poland, Thailand and the UK to compete against one another in the Tesco Global Hackathon 2018 on 12 and 13 July. The teams were given 24 hours to create an innovative technology solution that could revolutionise the future of retail. The teams produced a wide-range of innovative solutions focusing on improving the customer shopping experience in store and at home. Jordan Skinner, Trainee Produce Manager in our Loughborough Extra store said; “It’s been a really great experience and I would recommend taking part in the Hackathon to anybody working in our stores because it enables you to network and work with people who you wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to meet.” Thanks to everyone who competed and to those who came to watch the pitches. It was fantastic to see teams from so many different disciplines come together to create such innovative solutions in such a short amount of time. Congratulations to our winners! See you in 2019!
