In our Media team, we are always looking for opportunities to innovate and do things differently. What better way to do this than to bring 100 of the best media minds together, in one room, and work on a business brief! Alex Wade, who joined the business in 2013, talks us through the Media Hackathon we hosted last week: “We started off the day by talking our media partners through our business priorities for the year ahead, and our campaigns and achievements we are most proud of. After this, we set the teams a live brief to respond to, with the objective of helping Tesco become the most agile and helpful retailer in the UK. Each team then presented back, and a winner was picked. Each team was comprised of four different media partners, who may not usually work together. We did this purposefully to encourage the generation of ideas that may not usually come about. Each team also contained a Tesco facilitator to answer any Qs about Tesco as a business, and help refine ideas. The winning teams all got a bottle of bubbly. We also hope to progress conversations with our media partner
Abiola Falope joined us in 2015 and has been working as our Senior Legal Counsel as well as volunteering at the Islington Law Centre as a pro bono lawyer. For Abiola it means a lot to be able to use the skills she has gained over her career to help people facing legal challenges. Abiola tells us about her role within our Tesco business: “I have had an exciting time working for Tesco and now lead the Finance Legal Team, advising Tesco PLC and Bank on a variety of treasury and financial matters. A really proud moment was to have been shortlisted for the Legal Advisor of the year in the Women in Finance Awards 2018, it is a positive reflection of the opportunities I have been given here at Tesco. I am really passionate about mentoring people at the start of their career as I know this can be a challenging but critical time in one’s career story.” #tesco #aplacetogeton #volunteering Follow us here for more stories: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQI84

Last week we celebrated with our colleagues who passed our first ever LGV Apprenticeship programme. Darren was our first apprentice to pass with a distinction, we are extremely proud of him. He shares his experience with us below: "I've been working with Tesco for 17 years and for the past year I've been on the LGV Apprenticeship programme, it's been a great year. I wasn't going to apply as I'm not an academic type and I don't enjoy tests but I got a lot of encouragement from my manager so I thought I'd give it a shot. The last year has enabled me to gain confidence, get paid whilst getting a qualification and my time at work has been much more varied. My family have been proud of what I've achieved and I've been recommending this programme to my colleagues back at the distribution centre." #aplacetogeton #tescocareers #apprenticeships
Peter was our first LGV apprentice to pass his end point assessment, he's been working with us in our Dagenham distribution centre for just over two years and he joined us at our Tesco head office campus last week for our celebration event. Peter is an ambitious colleague who has so much drive and enthusiasm, it's so great to see that he embraced this opportunity and passed. He shares his experience with us below: "My manager Dean encouraged me to apply for the apprenticeship, and I am really happy he did. English is not my first language so I was worried even before I started but I am a strong minded person and really wanted to accomplish this. I found trying to gain qualifications at a later stage of life was challenging but the support network around me at work has been great. I felt really proud being at the celebration event last week, I can't believe I was there celebrating that I passed. I want to continue to move forward at Tesco and I really believe I can." #aplacetogeton #tescocareers #apprenticeships
Odartey joined the business as an In-store Technician in 2013 after completing his foundation degree in Aircraft Engineering at Kingston University: “I decided to apply for an in-store technician role, as I knew it would allow me to gain experience in a wide range of engineering maintenance. Being a store technician is unique in that, it allows you to have a real responsibility from day one in maintaining all Tesco assets and carrying on reactive and proactive maintenance, including plan preventive work. After five years I took on my new challenge as heating ventilation and air conditioning engineer and was responsible for looking after Tesco HVAC equipment for over 500 hundred Tesco stores with 16 team members. My current role is multi skilled fridge engineer and I’m responsible for maintaining, repairing and servicing over 10,000 Tesco fridges across London. The main thing that brings me to work every day is being recognised as a valued team member in my department. The support I receive from my managers and other senior colleagues is so encouraging.”
Alex, one of our Tech graduates has recently had the opportunity to take part in a placement with our technology innovation team, he shares his experience below. "Think of it like a seven week hackathon where you and your group get to tackle a specific problem within Tesco. We worked across stores, supply chain and the head office campus. To solve our challenge we were provided with state of the art mobile devices and ended up building a great end user product. It was a great experience bringing our ideas to fruition and envisaging how customers and colleagues might be using the latest technologies in the years to come." #aplacetogeton #tescocareers #graduates
