Our Software Engineering teams tackle lots of different problems, and their innovative solutions help us to serve our customers a little better every day. The way these teams are shaped is important to the impact that they can have; something which was debated at last week’s Devoxx UK conference, where Engineering Director Andy Hedges, and Head of Software Engineering Adrian Spender took to the stage. It’s Mental Health Awareness Week. We all have mental health, just like physical health. And like physical health, it can be good, bad and everything in between. Two years ago, Maria Simpson from our Brigg Superstore in Lincolnshire had a brilliant idea. She suggested giving free fruit to children to eat during shopping trips as an alternative to sweets. Today, that one idea has grown into a nationwide project, we now offer “Free Fruit for Kids” in over 800 stores across the country. We’ve given over 50 million pieces of free fruit away to kids since 2016. That’s an incredible achievement, and it means literally millions of children have had a healthy, free piece of fruit from Tesco in the last two years.
