Pros

Depop is very lucky to attract some of the nicest, smartest people I've ever met. I truly believe it's the company's mission that does it – everyone I've worked with seems to be very eco-conscious, progressive etc. I have a lot of praise for senior, mid and lower level employees. Sadly, the same can't be said about most management.

Cons

Where do I even start? Never ending layer of middle-management, treating people unequally and choosing clear favourites, putting you down instead of lifting you up. Depop is not only home to great fashion, it's also the house of racism and misogyny (it's great to hear from your manager, that your team is diverse, because you're all middle-class white but from different European countries). If you're anyone but an arrogant white guy, you won't have a great time trying to progress in the company. The goalpost keeps moving, as you desperately try to prove yourself to your manager. Don't worry – they won't even notice your efforts. You'll also be frustrated by a lack of consequence for people who are clearly messing up at every step. Get used to having your ideas dismissed or worse, claimed by your teammates as their own, with no credit to you. And as a reward for your sweat and tears you might be sent a notebook or a cookie – so it's all worth it, right?

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on your experiences of working at Depop; we’re really disappointed to hear that your overall impressions haven’t been more positive. We’re committed to being a workplace that champions everyone, and where ambitious and passionate individuals can thrive. We’ve grown a lot in the last few years, and alongside this we have brought more and more focus and resources into supporting and developing our people and strengthening our diversity, equality and inclusion strategy. This includes ensuring that our hiring practices - at every level - are fair, unbiased and represent a diverse funnel of candidates. We have also recently refreshed our performance review cycle to ensure regular and consistent touchpoints around progression and reward at all levels of the business. Since our founding moment, diversity, equity and inclusion has been integral to who we are as a business. The ethos of Depop is to celebrate individuality and difference - and over the last few years, as we’ve grown, we’ve worked consistently to extend this into a clear DEI vision and ensure our ethos is woven through how we operate day to day. This has included hiring a full-time Head of DEI, rolling out specialised DEI training for managers and leadership, and building a roadmap for improving representation and inclusion amongst our communities. The People Team encourages individuals to confidentially come forward to raise any concerns they may have in their teams at any point. Even though you no longer work at Depop, your opinion is still important to us. If you would like to discuss anything in further detail, please don’t hesitate to reach out to people@depop.com.

Pros

A lot of smart, committed and friendly people at team level Some opportunities for learning and development if you find them autonomously Exciting product that's doing good and used by millions of people Lasting a year will look great on your CV Pretty competitive pay and benefits

Cons

Culture has really suffered during the pandemic. Slow to adapt healthily to remote working and hyper hiring growth. Not a lot of time or energy for social stuff around endless zoom calls. Lack of structured processes around career progression and promotion leads to feelings of inequity. - seems more based on 'who you know' or prior level rather than individually earned skill or contribution. Men frequently hired into senior positions rather than promoting women. You feel at the bottom rung and unable to enact any change as a non-senior team member. No healthy feedback culture either amongst peers or to leadership meaning poor performance can go unchecked. Become very hierarchical with ineffective middle management who are afraid or unwilling to stand up to unreasonable or unclear leadership direction. Heavy culture of doing what you're told rather than challenging questionable decisions. Targets slow to be reforecast based on hiring shortfall and external factors plus very little collaboration or synergy between business and product, leading to pressure and ineffectiveness. Not a lot of clear, focussed shared vision or strategy to work to. An uncomfortable growing scrutiny on committed delivery plans over value generation in product teams. Not really a healthy agile product development practice. I reluctantly felt forced to leave feeling burned out and like my efforts were not recognised and feedback to improve things was unwelcome.

Pros

You will work with some true gems who genuinely support and encourage you. Some of the best people I've ever worked with were at Depop. Very generous with gifts and a lovely People team who try their absolute best!

Cons

I started bright eyed and bushy tailed, genuinely excited to work for such a progressive company. Sadly my time ended sooner than I'd have liked for a few reasons and I felt I had no other option than to leave. Lots of my wider team who I got on with really well left for reasons that are now clear. To say I felt psychologically unsafe is an understatement. Nepotism is rife, particularly in the team I was in. A senior member of the team was so out of touch it was honestly unbelievable, and their lack of care for certain members of their team plus favouritism created a toxic, uneasy atmosphere which was easy to sense even working remotely. It's a real shame that some of the employees so valued here just don't align with what Depop is trying to promote. Where is the inclusivity, support, taking care of employee mental health particularly over the last year or so and with what everyone has been through. People have been struggling on so many different levels and a little support from an employer can go such a long way rather than doing the exact opposite. These people may be good at their day jobs but without being able to manage a team and individuals sufficiently as well as no emotional intelligence or basic common sense, it's obviously going to make people leave if they don't feel supported on a basic level. So many people who I worked with felt the same. I expected more working for Depop and am writing this review in the hope that some genuine change can come from my experience and others can have a more enjoyable time at this company and feel valued and championed as they deserve to be.
