Fatberg alert! We went to investigate the pipe in Market Harborough recently after realising it was higher than normal, and discovered a large build up of fat. We managed to use high powered water jetters to remove it before it caused a serious blockage or pollution incident. This build-up is the result of hundreds of roasting trays, chip fryers and other grease going down plug holes. Fats down the sink cause a stink!
There's been some welcome rain across parts of our region this week, but this summer has still been the driest in recent memory. Thanks to a wet winter, though, we have good supplies in our reservoirs, as these images show. These aerial photos show Rutland Water, taken by part time pilot Dave Leggett in our fleet services team, and Pitsford Reservoir near Northampton, taken by Andrew Beardsley on a holiday flight back to the UK, this week. The reservoirs are at 88% and 87% capacity, but the impact of the dry weather can clearly be seen on the surrounding brown landscape.
"Company culture encapsulates a company’s personality—how it feels about and treats its employees, what it values, and even what it offers." Were pleased that we have featured in the ‘Best Cultures and Values’ in the UK based on Glassdoor ratings. Were committed to creating a culture that is inclusive and that our staff are proud to be part of. #glassdoor #values #culture http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQmVO
We're currently basking in a heat wave across the UK. But how can companies look after their employees and ensure they stay cool and refreshed? We've installed these ice cream freezers at some of our staff canteens. We've also sent out advice to all frontline staff on how to stay hydrated when they're out and about this summer.
It is sometimes easy to forget how nice your working environment is and how it can effect your health and wellbeing. We offer such a diverse range of jobs from working in a fast moving office environment to working outside in the fresh air. Each year we ask our staff to send in their photos from out and about and its amazing what we see. There are lots of animal encounters and some lovely views. In particular this year we have seen hedgehog and Badger rescues and even a slow worm relocation! At our Pitsford site we have also seen our staff up-cycle an old windsock into a hanging basket with flowers to attract pollinators. It is great to see our staff celebrating the biodiversity of our sites. If you’re interested in a career with Anglian Water then take a look at our careers site for an interesting variety of jobs http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQ12e
Yesterday we attended a careers fair in Chelmsford run by the Career Transition Partnership. This was specifically for military personnel leaving the armed forces. It was great to see lots of companies attending and an opportunity for military leavers to network and chat with different organisations. Our workforce includes many Reservists and ex-service men and women and it is important to recognise just how many transferable skills they have. We need to encourage more companies in our region to get involved. If you would like to know more about how you can be involved with supporting the armed forces then please send us a message, we are happy to share. #eaemployerengagement #armedforcesday
Last week was Reserves day and over the weekend it was Armed Forces day. This is a chance to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community. Here’s the story of Catherine who works in our Water Quality Team and is also a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy Reserves. We’re very proud of Catherine and all our reservists and former forces staff! #ArmedForcesDay #ReservesDay http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQprP
Our CEO Peter Simpson has been named again as one of the UK’s top business leaders to work for by employee review site #Glassdoor. #Glassdoor asks users to rate and rank CEOs and Peter Simpson came in at number 12 this year. We’ve also been rated 2nd Best Place To Work through #Glassdoor reviews. Peter said: “Although this list has my name on it, any recognition of Anglian Water is down to a huge number of very passionate and hard working members of our staff - as well as colleagues in our partner companies, suppliers and contractors. “It has been a tough year with challenges for us to step up to, but I am immensely proud of the work we’ve done to bring the issue of wellbeing to the forefront of business leaders’ minds as well as the strides we’ve made towards reducing plastic waste in our environment. “To each and every person who has worked on these projects, and the many others who’ve kept the region’s water and sewerage networks flowing around the clock, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you.”
We made a promise on World Oceans Day. We're announcing a new drive to rid our region of problem plastic by 2030. We're going to be working with others, exploring new ideas, supporting more community initiatives and eliminating single use plastic across our business. Read all about it here:
Yesterday we joined 50 other organisations including Marks and Spencer, Asda, The National Trust and the National Farmers Union to sign the Catchment Management Declaration. Read a blog from our chief executive Peter Simpson on why this is such a vital new partnership for people, wildlife and our economy.
