Sam completed our ten week Food Internship Programme with us before he went back to complete his final year at university. He talks about his experience with us. "I’ve learnt some great life lessons throughout my time here; how to lead projects, communicate more effectively and also how to act independently in the workplace. The responsibility that Tesco gives you is remarkable, you really do get to take control of a project. My highlight was seeing a fully functioning production line at my pet supplier and experiencing the end to end process which helped give context to the work I was doing. As an intern, I was quite nervous that I would be a hindrance to the team when I first started, but I wasn't and I never felt like that. My line manager and my buddy were absolutely fantastic and right from the start I felt like a member of the team who had something to contribute. I really felt that I was not only welcome, but valued." If you want to find out more and apply for our Food Internship, check out our website http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQxj1 #aplacetogeton

Last week our Chief People Officer, Natasha Adams had lunch with Julie Bird to discuss how Tesco will support her inspirational plan to raise awareness about the menopause. Eight years ago, Julie started the menopause - and her symptoms were debilitating. Julie’s own experience of menopause inspired her to set up a support group for Tesco colleagues experiencing similar symptoms - something which she says helped to give her "purpose" at her lowest point. "I just felt lost and alone, that's the only way I can describe it really... I was struggling with anxiety, I didn't understand all the emotions I was feeling." With 88% of women saying the menopause has an impact on working life, Julie is working to support our colleagues at Tesco. This work has proved a huge success – Julie’s work and insight will help us in developing our plans on how we continue to raise awareness and encourage colleagues to talk about how the menopause affects them. Jack is one of our Commercial Apprentices and is the Assistant Seller for Pittas, Wraps and Speciality Breads. He tells us about his experience. “After working in store for a few years, I was attracted to this apprenticeship because I wanted to make a bigger impact for Tesco, and wanted to make things happen on a larger scale. My week consists of giving trade updates, understanding food trends and to look for what we are missing from our range. I work with buyers, technologists and our suppliers on a daily basis to make sure that the products we offer are right for our customers. I’ve got a great network around me. One of my highlights was in my first role where my job was to create plans for promotion ends in store. The highlight was going into store for the first time to see my plan being implemented. If someone was thinking about applying for an apprenticeship I would say ‘Do it!’. Today we are launching our new Mental Health Awareness at Work e-learning available to all of our colleagues, part of our commitment to take action to tackle the stigma around mental health. Developed by Mind, this covers an introduction to mental health and wellbeing, common mental health problems and how mental health relates to our working lives. A big part of tackling stigma is having more open conversations around mental health. We hope that this training encourages and supports our colleagues to do this with each other, friends and family because every conversation really does help. Matthew has just finished his graduate programme and has been promoted to Campaign Manager. "The Marketing Graduate programme enabled me to experience different teams including local marketing, global insights and campaign marketing. I have to say the whole recruitment process was great, communication was open and honest and I had conversations throughout providing me with further guidance and advice at each stage. From day one and throughout the programme I had responsibility and autonomy for the projects I managed. I’m most proud of the ‘Food Love Stories’ campaign that I managed from start to finish. The culture here is inclusive, everyone is welcome and there is a good balance between working hard and socialising. I’ve come to realise you should never limit yourself to just one path or career direction, there are always opportunities to try something new and gain experience in a company like ours." Max talks to us about his time on our Technology Graduate Programme. "Having completed my degree in computer science I was looking for a graduate programme in an innovative and inspiring tech environment where I had future opportunities and a chance to make a difference. People were surprised when I said I found that at Tesco. It certainly isn’t a stuffy corporate business but a place you can bring yourself to work and dress casually too. My team really inspire me and the work is challenging, the code we write needs to be able to handle the sheer volume of customers. Millions of people could be interacting with the technology we develop which is critical to the business, meaning you have to be tenacious and resilient. I have recently been promoted to Software Development Engineer having completed my two year graduate programme. I really do have the opportunity to really make a big difference.
