What you need to know about the role
We’re looking for a Mechanical Team Members on days to work on our internal locomotive fleet in HRS on the Scunthorpe site. You will work to achieve plant operational/workshop targets, product quality, customer service and health and safety objectives.
You will be part of a multi-disciplined team, ensuring the most effective engineering service is provided to our manufacturing customers.
Using your skills to achieve business objectives, you will react to engineering, quality and safety issues as they arise and utilise your knowledge, experience and skill to initiate corrective actions.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns providing quick and effective solutions to minimize production downtime.
- Adhere to all safety standards ensuring maintenance activities are conducted in a safe and secure manner. Identify and mitigate potential safety hazards.
- Maintain records of maintenance activities
- Be available on some occasions to respond to emergency out of hours breakdowns
- Implement preventive maintenance to minimize downtime
- Repair or replace defective parts and components of machinery, including bearings, gears, shafts, engines, motors, and other mechanical elements.
- Identify and diagnose mechanical issues or equipment malfunctions quickly and accurately, using tools and diagnostic techniques to determine the root cause of problems
- Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on locomotives and associated rail machinery
What we need to know about you
We are seeking a skilled and motivated individual who is qualified to a minimum NVQ Level 3, or holds an equivalent qualification in a relevant mechanical trade. Candidates who have completed a recognised apprenticeship are also encouraged to apply. A strong mechanical foundation is essential, as the role involves working across a variety of equipment and systems.
Experience within the rail or locomotive sector would be highly advantageous, as would previous work with vehicles and plant machinery. This background will support the successful candidate in handling a diverse range of maintenance tasks and technical challenges.
We are looking for someone who has demonstrated reliability and responsibility in previous roles, and who thrives in a collaborative environment. You will work closely with maintenance staff, engineers, and operators to ensure the smooth running of operations and the timely completion of maintenance activities.
Flexibility is key, as the role requires adapting to different machinery, tasks, and new techniques. Strong time‑management skills are essential to prioritise workloads and meet scheduled maintenance deadlines. A proactive approach to safety is also vital, ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations and contributing to a safe working environment for all.
