Wesleyan celebrated Black History Month with a special event hosted by our BEME (Black, Ethnic Minority, and Everyone) Staff Network Group. Colleagues joined in person and online for an insightful session with Dr. Audrey Allwood, an expert on Caribbean migration and belonging. She shared her research on inter-generational kinship and mental health in the Black community. We were also joined by diversity advocate and part of our Members Advisory Board, Adrian McClean, for an inspiring Q&A and networking lunch. At Wesleyan, we’re dedicated to celebrating diversity and creating opportunities for learning and understanding, supporting a truly inclusive workplace for all.
For World Menopause Day 2024, our GEN (Gender) Staff Network Group arranged a fantastic event hosted in-person and online where colleagues bravely shared their personal journeys, along with stories of how they are supporting loved ones going through menopause. This was followed by an interactive webinar hosted by My Menopause Centre’s expert Dr Anna Greaves and Dietician Nigel Denby, who discussed how to eat well for the menopause. At Wesleyan, we’re committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace, and this is one of the many ways we’re doing this.
Our OMG! Staff Network Group brought colleagues together, both in-person and online, to celebrate National Coming Out Day for 2024. We heard from an inspiring panel who shared their personal journeys of coming out, along with stories of supporting loved ones. The Q&A sparked meaningful conversations, making it a truly special event for everyone. 🌈
Windrush Day, held on 22 June each year, commemorates the contributions of the Afro-Caribbean migrants in post-war United Kingdom after the first migrants arrived on the HMT Windrush in 1948. This year, we honoured the Windrush generation by hosting an event in our Birmingham Head Office alongside Kainé Management. In 2023, Wesleyan Foundation proudly donated £10,000 to support Kainé Management's educational programme on Windrush. This year, they brought their inspiring programme to Birmingham! Our colleagues had the unique opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from the Windrush generation, gaining insights into their experiences and rich cultural heritage. It was a day of learning, reflection, and connection, all accompanied by some delicious Caribbean cuisine prepared by Gongs Kitchen! 😄

This March, we held our first ever in-person 'Iftar in the Office' at our Head Office in Birmingham for colleagues fasting during Ramadan. Iftar is a meal shared just after sunset and is usually opened with something sweet like a date. To show our support for those who are fasting during Ramadan, we invited all colleagues to take part in the Wesleyan Day of Fasting. During the #Iftar event, we had presentations and heard from colleagues from different faiths who took part in the fast. This was followed by the Maghrib, prayer before Iftar, and just after sunset we broke our fast with some delicious food and drinks. In the spirit of giving, this Ramadan, we are raising money for The Trussell Trust who support food banks across the country including Birmingham and Oswestry where our offices are located. Donations will be match funded by Wesleyan.
As a celebration for International Women's Day, we hosted events at our Head Office in Birmingham and our offices in Oswestry. We were joined by internal speakers Claire Oldstein, Customer and Marketing Director, and Faraz Tasnim, Transformation Director, both discussing what International Women’s Day means to them. We had the pleasure of welcoming guest speaker Rebecca Mander FInstLM Founder of GuruYou™, who gave in depth insights and tips on how to be empowered and feel confident in the workplace. From our charity partner Edgbaston Foundation, we were joined by Jess Ward, who talked about the Wesleyan Foundation funded empowerment programme for young South Asian women and girls and how it has been positively impacting them. We were lucky enough to have Sadika Begum and Iman Najeeb from The Girls' Network join us, who hosted a stall for colleagues to discuss volunteering mentoring opportunities for girls and young women over a networking lunch. At Wesleyan, we are proud to support our employees and our aim is to create a supportive and inclusive environment everyday and through events like this.
